Abstract:

Tato práce má v úmyslu podat interpretaci první kapitoly epické básně Williama Blakea „Jerusalem The Emanation of the Giant Albion“. Vzhledem k tomu, že se jedná o nejkomplexnější z jeho tzv. iluminovaných knih, nedostává se jí stejné pozornosti jako zbytku jeho díla, a když už je někde zmíněna, bývá označována za apokalyptické vyvrcholení celého Blakeova symbolického systému a její první kapitola vedena jen jako úvod k celé básni, což je následek přehlížení některých aspektů Blakeova života. Tato práce se však snažila poukázat na skutečnost, že v některých ohledech je první kapitola, věnovaná veřejnosti („To the Public“), mnohem důležitější než kterákoliv z následujících kapitol, ale aby bylo možné pochopit Blakeův úmysl skrývající se za drsnou a nepřístupnou poezií této básně, je si potřeba uvědomit, že Blake vnímal veřejnost jako náboženskou skupinu. První část práce se soustředí na podání životopisného obrazu Williama Blake, ve kterém jsou rozpoznatelné náznaky jeho vztahu k veřejnosti, neklade si však za cíl předložit psychologickou studii autorovy osobnosti. Další oddíl nabízí přehled Blakeovy kritiky a složí jako protipól k textovému rozboru první kapitoly jeho básně. Rozmanitost prezentovaných výkladů akcentuje podobnost mezi tím, jakým způsobem tato obecná kritika ovlivňuje moderní chápání Blakeova umění a způsobem, jakým kritika veřejnosti ovlivnila Blakeovo umění. Některé z bodů, ve kterých se textový rozbor liší od obecného výkladu, jsou nastíněny v úvodu poslední části práce, kde jsou vědomě podány ve formě „veřejně“ odsouhlasené interpretace první kapitoly básně. „Jerusalem“ předkládá čtenáři obraz světové situace a je úkolem veřejnosti tento obraz změnit.

Abstract:

The thesis intends to provide an interpretative reading of the first chapter of William Blake’s epic poem Jerusalem The Emanation of the Giant Albion. Being the most complex of Blake’s ‘Illuminated Books’, it does not receive the same amount of critical attention as the rest of his work, and when it is discussed, it usually tends to be treated as the final stage in which all of Blake’s symbolism approaches an Apocalypse. Moreover, the established notion regarding the first chapter, titled “To the Public”, ignores certain aspects of Blake’s life and, consequently, labels it as an introduction to the whole poem. The thesis, on the other hand, attempted to show that in some respects it is of higher importance than any of the following chapters but to see Blake’s public as a religious group is vital in order to understand his intentions in forming the first chapter—and Jerusalem as a whole—as a God-forsaken desert of poetry. The “Introduction” briefly relates Blake’s life and hints at the relationship between the poet and his public, but claims to be no psychological or an otherwise introspective study whatsoever. Then follows a section offering a “Critical Overview” of several selected interpretations of Jerusalem, which serves as a counterpart of the ‘Close Reading’ of the first chapter. The diversity of the former is aimed to emphasise the fact that the way in which Blake is accepted by the public of his critics determines his current understanding in the same way as his ‘acceptance’ by the critical public determined his art during his life. Certain points of divergence between the critics and the close reader are indirectly accented in the beginning of the next section, which is consciously presented as a ‘consensually’ approved commentary on the first chapter. Jerusalem presents a picture of the world which needs to be changed; therefore it is of the utmost importance “To the Public”.
