Influence of nutrition in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou výživy při terapii farmakorezistentní epilepsie, konkrétně ketoterapií, což je všeobecně uznávaný způsob léčby epilepsie. Ketoterapie je souhrnné označení pro všechny dietní režimy založené na restrikci sacharidů, vyšším příjmu tuků a sníženém příjmu bílkovin. Teoretická část pojednává o problematice epilepsie, možných způsobech léčby a vlivu jednotlivých diet na celkový stav jedince s epilepsií. V práci jsou také popsány změny metabolismu při ketoterapii a vliv potencionálně prospěšných živin při léčbě epilepsie. Cílem bylo zhodnotit účinnost nastavené diety za účelem snížení frekvence epileptických záchvatů u čtyř jedinců. Sběr dat proběhl formou rozhovorů, na základě kterých byly sestaveny případové studie (kazuistiky), které dokážou nejlépe zhodnotit danou problematiku jediného ukazatele, který zkoumáme. Výsledky naznačují, že určitá forma ketoterapie dokáže u některých jedinců snížit frekvenci epileptických záchvatů dlouhodobě. U některých se účinky dostaví velmi rychle, u některých až po delší době.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of nutrition in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, specifically ketotherapy, which is a generally accepted treatment method of epilepsy. Ketotherapy is a collective term for all diet regimens based on carbohydrate restriction, higher fat intake and reduced protein intake. The theoretical part deals with the issue of epilepsy, possible treatments, and the effect of ketotherapy on the overall condition of an individual with epilepsy. The diploma thesis also describes changes in metabolism during ketotherapy and the effect of potentially beneficial nutrients in the treatment of epilepsy. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of the set diet, in order, to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures in four individuals. Data collection took place in the form of interviews on the basis, of which case studies were compiled and can best evaluate the issue of the only indicator we are researching. The results suggest that some form of ketotherapy can reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures in some individuals in the long term. For some, the effects come very quickly, for some it takes longer.
