The Comic interpretation of The Castle by Franz Kafka

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem bakalářské práce je komiksová adaptace Zámku Franze Kafky, jehož literární předlohu považujeme za jedno z nejvýznamnějších děl 20. století. Autory tohoto zpracování jsou americký spisovatel David Zane Mairowitz a český umělec Jaromír Švejdík. Cílem této práce je představit komiksovou adaptaci Zámku a pokusit se toto dílo analyzovat. V první části práce se budeme věnovat odborné terminologii, která je spjata se stavbou komiksu a kterou poté uplatníme při analýze grafického románu. Dále se zaměříme na život a dílo spisovatele Franze Kafky, což úzce souvisí s interpretací jak literární předlohy, tak komiksového zpracování. Ve druhé části práce se nejprve budeme soustředit na rozbor původního románu Zámek, poté se zaměříme na analýzu komiksové adaptace. Závěrem práce bude porovnání specifik obou variant románu.

Abstract:

The main focus of this Bachelor's Thesis is the comicbook adaptation of Franz Kafka's The Castle, one of the most important literary works of the twentieth century. The adaptation was created by the American writer David Zane Mairowitz and a Czech artist Jaromír Švejdík. This Bachelor's Thesis aims to introduce the comicbook adaptation of The Castle and examine its main themes. The first part of this paper is going to explain the terminology connected to the creation of a comicbook, which is then going to be used during the analysis of the graphic novel. After that we shall focus on the life and works of Franz Kafka as a necessary background needed for proper understanding of both the novel and the comicbook adaptation. The second part of this paper begins by the interpretation of the original novel, after which we also interpret the comicbook adaptation. The final part of this paper is then focused upon the comparison of the previously examined novel and its adaptation.
