Comparison of British and American Idioms with Equivalent Meaning

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to examine a selected sample of pairs of British and American idioms which have equivalent meaning but differ slightly in form. The differences are put under intense scrutiny and classification of differences is introduced. Then a corpus search is conducted to find out about the frequency of British idioms and their American equivalents and determine whether idioms labelled as American in a dictionary occur in a corpus of British texts.
