Modeling bat populations in the Moravian Karst

Abstract:

Netopýr velký je nejhojnějším a největším netopýrem na území republiky. Je součástí křehkého ekosystému živočichů obývajících oblast Moravského krasu. V rámci této práce se věnujeme analýze populace tohoto netopýra. Zkoumáme vývoj počtu jedinců v Kateřinské a Sloupsko-šošůvských jeskyních, vliv teploty na aktivitu netopýrů v období hibernace a dynamický model obsazenosti jeskyně. Získané informace by měly zefektivnit ochranu tohoto druhu netopýra. Tato práce používá různé statistické metody jako převod na jednotné datum, Mann-Whitneyho U test a ostrůvkový model populace. Bylo zjištěno, že se populace netopýra velkého za posledních dvacet let v Kateřinské jeskyni výrazně snížila. Naopak v Sloupskošošůvských došlo k nárůstu počtu jedinců. Bylo potvrzeno, že vyšší okolní teplota zvyšuje aktivitu netopýrů v období hibernace. Model obsazenosti Kateřinské jeskyně prokázal, že populace netopýrů v této jeskyni je stabilní a celková obsazenost jeskyně má tendenci se ustálit na 85,1%. Větší počet měřených údajů by v budoucnosti mohl přispět k zpřesnění modelů nastíněných v této bakalářské práci.

Abstract:

Greater mouse-eared bat is the largest and most common species of bats living in the Czech Republic. It is a part of very fragile ecosystem of animals living in the area of Moravian Karst. This thesis focuses on the analysis of the population of this species of bats. We explore the development of the number of greater mose-eared bat in Kateřinská and Sloupsko-šošůvské caves, the effect of various temperatures on the activity of bats during hibernation period and the dynamical model of occupancy of the caves. Acquired information should make the protection of this species of bats more effective. This thesis employs various statistical models such as the conversion of measurements to the same date, Mann-Whitney’s U test and metapopulation dynamics model. The analysis revealed a decreasing trend in the population of great mouse-eared bat in Kateřinská cave over the span of last 20 years. On the other hand the population in Sloupsko-šošůvské cave has had an increasing tendency during the same period. It was confirmed that higher temperature outside of the cave increases the activity of bats during the hibernation period. The model of occupancy of Kateřinská cave proved that the population of bats in this cave is stable. The equilibrium occupancy of the cave settles on the value of 85.1%. Larger number of measured data could increase the accuracy of sample models shown in this thesis.
