Wenceslas II and the nobility in the light of the Zbraslav Chronicle and the Chronicle of the so-called Dalimil

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Václav II. a šlechta ve světle Zbraslavské kroniky a Kroniky tak řečeného Dalimila se na základě analýzy uvedených kronik a studia sekundárního materiálu pramenného, historiografického a literárně-vědného, věnuje rozboru obrazu vztahu panovníka a šlechty, který nám předkládají autoři obou kronik. Cílem práce je objasnit vývoj vztahu krále a šlechty od návratu Václava II. zpět do země po smrti jeho otce a jeho následném zajetí braniborským markrabětem ve světle záznamů obou zkoumaných kronik. Pro výslednou komparaci bylo do studia částečně zahrnuto i období předcházející vládě Václava II. Informace podané autory zmíněných narativních pramenů byly podrobeny důkladnému rozboru a získané poznatky konfrontovány se závěry dosavadního bádání na tomto poli. Analýza zjištěných výsledků přinesla poznání, že vztah obou zkoumaných subjektů procházel vývojem plně v kontextu s postupnou stabilizací Českého království po návratu Václava II. do země. Podrobným studiem pramenného materiálu a komparací se závěry historiků bylo dosaženo zjištění, že postavení šlechty v době vlády Václava II. se diametrálně lišilo od jejího působení za vlády Přemysla Otakara II. Václav svůj vztah ke šlechtě nezakládá na autoritativním přístupu jako jeho otec, ale snaží se o udržení rovnováhy. Zbraslavská kronika předkládá obraz vztahu krále a šlechty plně v intencích záměru vytvořit dílo, které uchovává obraz krále-světce a v duchu panovníkovy jedinečnosti pohlíží i na jeho vztah ke šlechtě. Kronika tak řečeného Dalimila věnuje výrazně větší prostor Václavovu otci, Přemyslu Otakarovi II. V jeho práci je šlechta ústředním aktérem, v dalších dvou složkách společnosti, králi a patriciátu, autor spatřuje její hlavní odpůrce. Obě kroniky kladně hodnotí panovníkovy zakladatelské aktivity. K dalším dosaženým závěrům patří, že zemská nobilita měla patrně při korunovaci Václava II. aktivní podíl na konkrétních rolích inauguračního aktu. V otázce finanční a hospodářské politiky král výrazně posílil své postavení v případě horního regálu a mincovnictví, naopak v otázce regálu půdního se dařilo své postavení upevňovat šlechtě.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis Wenceslaus II and the nobility in the light of the Chronicle of Zbraslav and the Chronicle of the so-called Dalimil pursues, on the basis of the mentioned chronicles and a study of secondary source materials, historiographical and literary-scientific, analysis a picture of a relation between the ruler and the nobility which is put forward by the authors of both chronicles. The main objective of the thesis is to shed light on the relation between the king ant the nobility after Wenceslaus II return to the country after the death of his father, and his subsequent imprisonment by the Margrave of Brandenburg in the light of the records from both researched chronicles. For the purpose of the final comparison the period preceding the rule of Wenceslaus II was included. The information given by both authors of the mentioned narrative sources were subjected to thorough analysis and the findings were confronted with the results of the existing research in this field. The study of the findings revealed that the relation between the researched subjects went along with the gradual stabilization of the Czech kingdom after the return of Wenceslaus II to the country. After a detailed study of the sources and the comparison with the historians´ results it was discovered that the status of the nobility during the period ruled by Wenceslaus II was diametrically different from the period of the rule of Ottokar II of Bohemia. Wenceslaus doesn´t build his relation with the nobility on an authoritative basis as did his father but he tries to keep it in balance. The Chronicle of Zbraslav presents a picture of a relation between the ruler and the nobility in an intention to create a picture of a king-saint and in the spirit of the ruler´s uniqueness regards the relation with the nobility. The Chronicle of the so-called Dalimil offers more material about Wenceslaus´ father Ottokar II of Bohemia. In this work the nobility is a fundamental player, and the other two, the king and the patriciate, the author regards as the nobility´s main opponents. Both chronicles positively assess the ruler´s founding activities. Another conclusion suggests that the gentry played an active role in specific functions in an inauguration act during the Wenceslaus II´s coronation. Regarding the financial and the economic policy, the king strengthened his position in case of the upper code and the coining unlike the nobility that strengthened its position in case of the land code.
