Character strengths and perceived social support in relation to life satisfaction among the instutionalized elderly

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na prozkoumání souvislosti jednotlivých silných stránek charakteru vymezených klasifikací VIA (Peterson & Seligman, 2004) a vnímané sociální opory se životní spokojenosti u seniorů v institucionalizované péči. Pozornost je věnována také možnosti vlivu vnímané sociální opory na vztah mezi silnými stránkami charakteru a životní spokojeností a dále vztahu demografických charakteristik k jednotlivým proměnným stejně jako tomu, jak vidí své silné stránky a životní spokojenost samotní senioři. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 88 seniorů ze čtyř sociálních zařízení pro seniory, z toho bylo 70 žen a 18 mužů s průměrným věkem 80,1 let. Z metod byla použita Škála životní spokojenosti, Multidimenzionální škála vnímané sociální opory, Dotazník charakteristických silných stránek a otevřené otázky. Výsledky ukazují, že z druhů vnímané sociální opory se životní spokojeností souvisí jen vnímaná sociální opora od rodiny, a to pouze slabě, větší souvislost se životní spokojeností byla prokázána u silných stránek charakteru autoregulace, vytrvalost, spravedlivost, vděčnost, obezřetnost a sociální inteligence. Vliv vnímané sociální opory na vztah mezi silnými stránkami charakteru a životní spokojeností prokázán nebyl. Senioři nejčastěji spojují spokojenost se zdravím, rodinou a materiálním a finančním zabezpečením a nejvíce u sebe vnímají silné stránky charakteru laskavost, vytrvalost, integritu a lásku. V práci jsou dále prezentovány a diskutovány výsledky týkající se vztahu silných stránek charakteru k vnímané sociální opoře a rozdílům v jednotlivých proměnných u skupin osob rozdělených na základě demografických charakteristik.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to examine the relationship between various character strengths based on the VIA classification system (Peterson & Seligman, 2004), perceived social support and life satisfaction among the elderly in institutionalized care. Attention is also paid to the possibility of the influence of perceived social support on the relationship between character strengths and life satisfaction and so to the relation of demographic characteristics to each variable as well as how elderly people see their own character strengths and life satisfaction. Data came from 88 elderly people from four institutions for the elderly, of which 70 were women and 18 men with average age of 80.1 years. The Satisfaction with Life Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Signature Strengths Test and open questions were used. Results show that of the kinds of perceived social support only perceived social support from family slightly correlates with the life satisfaction, higher correlation with the life satisfaction was demonstrated in character strengths self regulation, persistence, fairness, gratitude, prudence and social intelligence. The influence of perceived social support on the relationship between character strengths and life satisfaction was not confirmed. Elderly people most often associates satisfaction with health, family and financial and material security and most often perceive in themselves character strengths kindness, persistence, authenticity and love. The paper also presents and discusses results concerning the relationship between character strengths and perceived social support and differences in all variables among groups of people divided on the basis of demographic characteristics.
