Day of the Dead (1985): Psychological drama and different form of gore sub-genre in films of George A. Romero

Abstract:

V roce 1968 natočil režisér George A. Romero svůj první film se zombie tematikou – Noc oživlých mrtvol. Tento film znamenal redefinování již zaběhlých norem ve vyprávění v zombie subžánru a uvědomění si nového pojetí hororu celkově. Postupně vznikla volná pokračování: Úsvit mrtvých (1978) a dále Den mrtvých z roku 1985. Tím se tak vytvořil triptych filmových děl, která jsou základem pro moderní chápaní zombie subžánru. Na příkladě posledního zmíněného filmu se pokusíme nastínit problematiku žánrových postupů ve vyprávění, ale i stylu, tak jak vše pojali tvůrci filmu.

Abstract:

In 1968 film director George A. Romero made his first film with zombie topic - Night of the Living Dead. This film has meant redefining well-established standards in narrative in the zombie subgenre and realizing new horror concept overall. Gradually formed loose sequels: Dawn of the Dead(1978) and Day of the Dead (1985). This so created three cinematographic works, which are the basis for the modern understanding of the zombie subgenre. On the example of the last-mentioned film we try to outline the issues of the genre techniques in the narrative, but also the style, in the way the makers approached the film.
