Three novels among the many stories - Jan Balabán and his novel creation

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá románovou tvorbou Jana Balabána, která neprávem stojí ve stínu povídek tohoto autora. Konkrétně jde o romány: Černý beran, Kudy šel anděl a Zeptej se táty. Nejprve je představen Jan Balabán jako autor a člověk, poté jeho jednotlivé romány. Každý z těchto románů podléhá detailnějšímu rozboru, který se soustředí na žánr a kompozici, místo a čas románu, hlavní postavy, vypravěče a dominantní motivy. Ke každému románu jsou přiřazeny i literární ohlasy a recenze, jež dokládají kritickou recepci každého díla. Nakonec jsou uvedeny charakteristické rysy, jež mají romány Jana Balabána společné nejen mezi sebou, ale také ve vztahu k Balabánovým povídkám. Závěr práce se pak věnuje zařazení románové tvorby Jana Balabána do kontextu české literatury.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with Jan Balaban's novels which unjustly stand in the shadow of the short stories by this author. Specifically, the thesis deals with these novels: Black Ram, Where the Angel Went and Ask Dad. Firstly, Jan Balaban is introduced as an author and a man, and then his individual novels are described. Each of these novels is subject to more detailed analysis, which focuses on the genre and composition, time and place of the novel, main characters, narrator and dominant motifs. For each novel are assigned the literary reviews and testimonials that demonstrate the critical reception of each work. Finally, the characteristic features, which are common for Jan Balaban's novels not only among themselves but also in relation to Balaban's stories, are introduced. Conclusion of the work is devoted to the classification of Jan Balaban's novels in the context of Czech literature.
