Scholar rhetorical handbooks – the collection Formularius epistolarum in the lights of ars dictaminis

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá středověkým rétorickým uměním ars dictaminis, a to konkrétně textem Formularius epistolarum cum exposicione rhetoricali, který je dochován v rukopisu z 15. století (sign. IX E 4, fol. 114r–197v) uloženém v Národní knihovně České republiky v Praze. Jedná se o sbírku listů, které jsou doplněny rozmanitými komentáři. Hlavní náplní práce je rozbor vybraných listů z této sbírky na základě teoretické příručky Summa dictaminis cum prologo Laurentii de Aquileia, která se také nachází v tomto rukopisu (fol. 21r–58r). Analýza listů se zaměřuje především na středověkou teorii o jednotlivých částech listu, jejím cílem je zjistit, jak byla teoretická pravidla používána v praxi, zda byla důsledně dodržována či nikoliv. Získané poznatky jsou dále srovnány s rozborem listů vybraných z teoreticko-praktické příručky s názvem Rhetorica cum multis epistolarum speciminibus (fol. 91r–113r). Součástí práce je také přepis vybraných listů a regesty všech diktamin obsažených v této sbírce. Dále je stručně prozkoumána i forma jednotlivých komentářů.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the part of medieval rhetoric called ars dictaminis, especially with a collection of letters known as Formularius epistolarum cum exposicione rhetoricali, which is composed of letters and commentaries to them. This text is preserved in manuscript IX E 4 from 15th century (folios 114r–197v), which is deposited in the National Library of the Czech Republic and contains various rhetorical handbooks. The thesis focuses especially on the analysis of the chosen letters from this collection based on the theoretical work Summa dictaminis cum prologo Laurentii de Aquileia which is preserved in this manuscript too (folios 21v--58r). The dictamina are parsed on the basis of rules related to parts of letter. Analysing these letters, the aim is to find out how the theoretical rules were used in practice if they are observed thoroughly or not. The gained results are compared with the analysis of the dictamina which contains theoretical handbook Rhetorica cum multis epistolarum speciminibus (folios 91r--113r). Transcription of the analysed letters and regesta of all letters which this collection contains create parts of this thesis too. The nature and structure of commentaries are briefly examined, the type of information introduced, types of expressions commented on by the author of the collection.
