The Jesuits and Architecture in the Bohemian Province between 1625 and 1675. Tradition and Building Practice of the Order on the Example of Several Jesuit Colleges.

Abstract:

Moje disertační práce je věnována jezuitským stavbám v české jezuitské provincii v období od roku 1625 do roku 1675. Protože není možné prozkoumat historii všech jezuitských kolejí a kostelů, které byly v této době postaveny, vybrala jsem si pouze čtyři koleje, kde působil jezuitský kněz Jiří Bohatý jako jezuitský odborník na stavby a jejich přípravu a jezuitský bratr Šimon Pitz jako stavitel. Mým cílem bylo sestavit stavební historii těchto kolejí na základě příběhů profesního života těchto jezuitů. Jedná se o jezuitské koleje v Jičíně, Hradci Králové, Kladsku a Klatovech, kde tito jezuité aktivně zasahovali do procesu přípravy plánů a jejich schvalování, ale také do vedení staveb, od položení základního kamene až téměř do jejich dokončení. Záměrně jsem napsala „téměř", protože jezuitský způsob přípravy staveb byl velmi náročný proces a často v něm docházelo ke změnám. Tyto změny byly obvykle dány nedostatkem financí záměr nebo různými jinými okolnostmi, které vedly k potřebě změny stavebních plánů. Na tomto procesu se podílela řada odborníků, ať už pocházejících z řádu, "delineátorů" a stavitelů, nebo světských stavitelů a architektů. Kolej v Jičíně, založená Albrechtem z Valdštejna, byla postavena jako první. Bezprostředně poté, co bylo určeno místo budoucích staveb, nedaleko kostela sv. Jakuba, potřebovali jezuité postavit školu, jejíž stavba započala v roce 1627. Jen o rok později byl položen základní kámen jejich koleje. Stavba byla provedena podle plánů Giovanniho Pieroniho, ale vedena a stavěna byla stavitelem Simonem Pitzem. Kvadratura byla dokončena v roce 1632 a jezuité se přestěhovali do své nové budovy. Avšak dvě křídla, směřující z kvadratury směrem ke kostelu, byla dokončena až v roce 1659. Nový kostel sv. Ignáce nebyl vůbec postaven. Jezuité používali starý gotický kostel sv. Jakuba, který byl přejmenován na kostel sv. Ignáce. Jezuitská kolej v Hradci Králové neměla tak významného fundátora, pouze několik malých donátorů. Prostor pro výstavbu koleje, gymnázia a semináře, na centrálním náměstí vybral páter Adam Kravařský, který rovněž zajistil vhodné dárce. Ti pomohli jezuitům vykoupit stávající domy, které stály na místě budoucích budov. V roce 1650 pověřil rektor Jiří Bohatý stavitele Šimona Pitze vypracováním řady plánů jejich budoucího kostela a koleje, aby si mohli vybrat nejvhodnější variantu uspořádání budoucích staveb. S výběrem pomohl také jezuitský generál v Římě. Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie byl postaven Carlem Luragem podle jeho vlastního modelu a podle skici Šimona Pitze. Kostel byl vyzdoben a vysvěcen již v roce 1666. Gymnázium bylo stavěno až na počátku 18. století a to podle plánů stavitele Pavla Bayera. Rektor Jiří Bohatý vytvořil také první dvě varianty plánů pro jezuitskou kolej v Kladsku. V průběhu desetiletí bylo vytvořeno mnoho dalších plánů, včetně jednoho plánu Šimona Pitze. Na konec se stavba začala stavět podle plánu, který vytvořil neznámý německý stavitel. Autor tohoto plánu byl inspirován ještě prvními kresbami Jiřího Bohatého. Stavba začala v roce 1655 a byla vedena Carlem Luragem. Dokončení stavby trvalo téměř 40 let. Pro každé křídlo budovy se musely vytvořit nové, modifikované plány. Od roku 1665 vedl stavbu Andrea Carove. Stavba jezuitské koleje v Klatovech a kostela, zasvěceného Neposkvrněnému početí Panny Marie a sv. Ignáce, nebyla ani snadná ani rychlá. Jezuitský provinciál, páter Blažej Slanina poslal v roce 1651 stavitele Simona Pitze do Klatov, aby tam pomohl místnímu staviteli připravit stavbu. Simon Pitz vytvořil dva plány, ve kterých byl jezuitský kostel umístěn hned vedle Černé věže a jezuitská kolej na něj navazovala tak, že

její průčelí tvořilo jednu dlouhou linii, téměř až k západnímu konci uličky. Kostel byl podélnou bazilikou ve tvaru latinského kříže s transeptem a velkou kupolí nad křížením. Díky zásahu rektora Teodora Moreta byl kostel oddělen od koleje a přesunut do čela náměstí, tehdejšího trhu. Další rektor Jiří Bohatý změnil již zahájenou stavbu koleje. Pravděpodobně díky rektorovi Theodoru Moretovi byl kostel postaven na jiném místě, ale ve stejné podobě, jakou navrhl Šimon Pitz před několika lety. Takový typ kostela, kostel "římského typu", s transeptem a kupolí, nebyl v té době v české provincii běžný. Od roku 1656 byla stavba kostela vedena architektem Carlem Luragem a později Giovannim Domenicem Orsim. Chrám byl dokončen až počátkem 18. století. Všechny tyto koleje měly odlišnou historii a měly různé stavební podmínky. Co však bylo společné pro tyto čtyři koleje, to byli lidé, kteří stáli při jejich vzniku, rektor Jiří Bohatý a koadjutor a stavitel Šimon Pitz. Doufám, že jsem naplnila svůj záměr a blíže objasnila historii těchto čtyř kolejí na životních příbězích dvou jezuitů, jednoho kněze a jednoho stavitele.

Abstract:

My doctoral thesis is devoted to Jesuit buildings in the Bohemian province during the period from about 25 to 1675. Because it is not possible to research the history of all Jesuit colleges and churches built in that time, I have chosen only four of them, in which Jesuit priest Jiří Bohatý was acting as a construction expert and Jesuit brother Šimon Pitz was acting as a builder.. My intention was to compile the building history of those Colleges, based on life stories of those two Jesuits. These are Jesuit colleges in Jičín, Hradec Králové, Kłodzko and Klatovy, where those Jesuits actively intervened in the process of preparing plans and approving them, but also in construction management, from laying the foundation stone to almost to the completion. I have intentionally written "almost" because the method of preparing plans and buildings was a very demanding process in the Jesuit Order and often there used to be changes in it. These changes were usually caused by a lack of funds or other circumstances, causing the need to change plans. This process has been attended by a number of experts over the years, whether from the Jesuit Order, "delineators" and builders, or secular builders and architects. The college in Jičín, founded by Albrecht of Wallenstein, was built as first of them. Immediately after the location of future buildings was finally determined, not far from the Gothic church of St. James, the Jesuits needed to build a school, whose construction began in 1627. Only one year later, the foundation stone of their college was laid. The construction was carried out according to the Giovanni Pieroni´s project, but it was led and built by the builder Simon Pitz. The quadrature was completed in 1632 and the Jesuits moved to their new building. However, two wings, heading from the quadrature towards the church, were completed only in 1659. The new church St. Ignatius was not built at all. Jesuits used the old Gothic church of St. Jacob, which was renamed the church of St. Ignatius. The Jesuit College in Hradec Králové did not have such a significant founder, only few small donors. Space on the central square for the construction of the Jesuit College, school and seminar were chosen by Adam Kravařský, who also sought out suitable donors to help the Jesuits redeem existing houses, which were standing on the site of future buildings. In the 1650, Rector Jiří Bohatý commissioned the builder Šimon Pitz to drew up a number of plans for their future church and the College, so that they could choose the most suitable option for their future buildings. The Jesuit General helped also with the selection in Rome. The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary was built by Carlo Lurago according to his own model, and according to sketches, made by Šimon Pitz. The church was decorated and consecrated allready in 1666. The school was built only at the beginning of the 18th century according to the plans of the builder Paul Bayer. Rector Jiří Bohatý created also first two variants of plans for the Jesuit College in Kladsko. Many other variants of plans were created there over the course of a decade, including one plan by Simon Pitz. In the end, the construction was being built according to the plan, which had been created by an unknown German writing builder. The author of that plan was inspired by the first drawings by Jiří Bohatý. The construction began in 1655, and was led by Carlo Lurago. However, the completion of the construction lasted nearly 40 years. For each wing of the building, new modified plans had to be created. Since 1665 Andrea Carove led the construction. The construction of the Jesuit College in Klatovy and of the church devoted to the Immaculate Conception of Virgin Mary and St. Ignatius was neither easy nor fast. ich the Jesuit Church was located next to the Black Tower and the Jesuit College followed him, so that its facade consisted of one long line almost to the west end of the aisle. The church was a lengthwise basilica in the form of the Latin cross with a transept and a large dome over the crossing. Thanks to Rector Teodor Moret's intervention, the church was separated from the College and moved to the head of the square, the market of that time. Another rector Jiří Bohatý rebuilt the already started construction of the College. Probably thanks to Rector Theodor Moret, the church was built in another place, but in the same form, as Simon Pitz had designed a few years ago. Such type of church, the "Roman type" church, with a transept and a cupola, was not common in the province of Bohemia in that time. Since 1656 the construction of the church was led by the architect Carlo Lurago and later by Giovanni Domenico Orsi. The temple was completed in the early 18th century. Those four colleges had different history and different building conditions. However, the thing which those four colleges had in common, were the people, who stood at their origin, rector Jiří Bohatý and coadjutor and the builder Šimon Pitz. I hope I have accomplished my intention to clarify the history of the four Jesuit colleges and churches through the life stories of two Jesuits, one priest and one builder.
