Modality in Gregorian Chant Melodies from a Computational Perspective

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Modalita v melodiích gregoriánského chorálu z výpočetního hlediska“, inspirována hypotézou centonizace, experimentálně ověřuje, zda existuje množina melodických jednotek, pomocí kterých lze charakterizovat modální příslušnost gregoriánských melodií. Na antifonách z databáze Cantus lze mody klasifikovat pomocí charakteristických jednotek s přesností 82 % až 92 %, zatímco „tradiční“ metoda dosahuje přesností 78 % až 87 %. Charakteristické jednotky pro různé žánry chorálu se liší.

Abstract:

The thesis „Modality in Gregorian chant melodies from a computational point of view“, inspired by the centonization hypothesis, experimentally verifies whether there is a set of melodic units that can be used to characterize the modal affiliation of Gregorian melodies. Using antiphons from the Cantus database, the modal classification can be performed using characteristic units with an accuracy of 82% to 92%, whereas the 'traditional' method achieves an accuracy of 78% to 87%. The characteristic units for different genres of chant vary.
