Irish Stereotypes in Harry Potter Novels and Films

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje stereotypizaci Irů a stereotypům vyskytujících se v dílech kouzelnické ságy o Harry Potterovi, a to jak v knižní, tak filmové podobě. Teoretická část se zabývá původem a příčinami stereotypů a jejich zasazením do historického kontextu Irska. Praktická část analyzuje úryvky z celé fantasy série Harryho Pottera, především pak stěžejní postavu irského původu Seamuse Finnigana a v případě, že je to možné, porovnává mezi sebou také zpracování jednotlivých pasáží knižní a filmové verze. Směrem od knih k filmům je mnohdy patrný obrovský posun, ve smyslu záměrného stupňování jednotlivých stereotypů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with stereotyping of Irish and with stereotypes that can be found in the works of the magic saga about Harry Potter both in book and film form. The theoretical part concerns with the origin and roots of stereotypes and their placement in the historical context of Ireland. The practical part analyzes excerpts from the entire fantasy series of Harry Potter, especially the key character of Irish origin Seamus Finnigan and, if possible, compares the processing of individual passages of the book and film versions. Between the books and films, there is frequently apparent a huge shift, in terms of intentional escalation of particular stereotypes.
