Spontaneous and conditioned magnetoreception of animals

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá magnetorecepcí, schopností živočichů vnímat přirozené magnetické pole Země. Záměrem této práce je především přehlédnout a porovnat dva odlišné experimentální přístupy ve výzkumu magnetorecepce – sledování spontánních behaviorálních projevů živočichů vnímajících magnetické pole s pozorováním chování, které je vyvoláno aplikací podmiňovací techniky. Úvodní část představuje dva předpokládané mechanismy magnetorecepce terestrických zvířat s větším zaměřením na model radikálových párů. Další část práce diskutuje klasické podmiňování jako metodu smyslové fyziologie s důrazem na rozvržení časové osy při vytváření podmíněného spojení. Jako součást práce jsou přiloženy tři články, na nichž se jako autor podílím a jejichž obsah je zde prezentován a výsledky diskutovány. První studie rozšiřuje prostřednictvím verifikace znalosti o vlivu magnetického pole na poziční chování skotu, tzv. magnetický alignment. Tato studie zároveň reprezentuje metodu pozorování čistě spontánní behaviorální odpovědi na zemské magnetické pole, a to v přirozeném prostředí venkovního biotopu u savců. Další dvě práce se soustředí na hmyz v laboratorním prostředí. Druhá studie představuje kromě jiného fenomén tzv. magneticky indukovaný neklid, jenž je spontánní odpovědí na pravidelné rotace umělého magnetického pole. Poslední studie zavádí klasickou averzivní podmiňovací techniku do výzkumu magnetorecepce, kde bylo cílem stanovit přibližnou rychlost transdukce a vyhodnocení magnetického podnětu. Třetí práce, na které jsem se nejvíce podílel, se věnuje otázce časových parametrů a přináší originální výsledky ukazující, že tento mechanismus může být dost rychlý, aby řídil orientaci a pohyb zvířat. Disertační práce také slouží k porovnání kladů a záporů různých experimentálních přístupů při sledování chování zvířat ve výzkumu dosud neznámého magnetorecepčního smyslu.

Abstract:

Presented dissertation thesis is focused on magnetoreception - ability of the animals to perceive natural magnetic field of Earth. The aim of this study is to provide an overview and to compare of two different approaches in magnetoreception research - observation of spontaneous behavioral manifestations of the animals perceiving a magnetic field, and observation of behavior, which is caused by the application of conditional technique. Introduction part describes two presumed mechanisms of terrestrial magnetoreception focusing specifically on the model of radical pairs. The next part of the work discusses classical conditioning as a sensory physiology method with an emphasis on the timeline layout during a creation of conditioned connection. I participated on three articles as an author and they are attached to this work. Their content is presented and the results are discussed here. The first article is a verification type of study which extends our knowledge of magnetic field influence on positional behavior of cattle, so called magnetic alignment. This study also represents a method of observation of merely spontaneous behavioral response of mammals to earth magnetic field in a natural biotope environment off the laboratory. Next two articles focus on the insects in laboratory conditions. The first of them shows, among others, a phenomenon of so called magnetically induced restlessness that is a spontaneous reaction to periodic rotation of magnetic field. The last article implements a classical aversive conditional technique into the research of magnetoreception. The aim of this study was to determine an approximate speed of transduction and processing of magnetic stimulus. The third study, where my participation was dominant, deals with the question of time parameters and gives original results showing that this mechanism can be fast enough to control the orientation and movement of the animals. This dissertation thesis also compares positive and negative aspects of various experimental approaches in behavioral studies where still unknown magnetoreception sense of animals is investigated.
