Burnout syndrome among neurosurgical nurses

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo zjistit možný výskyt syndromu vyhoření u sester pracujících na neurochirurgických odděleních a zjistit souvislosti mezi syndromem vyhoření a sociodemografickými faktory sester. Metodika: Průzkumný soubor tvořilo 74 sester pracujících na neurochirurgických odděleních nemocnic Moravskoslezského kraje - Fakultní nemocnice Ostrava a Městská nemocnice Ostrava. Průzkum v těchto nemocnicích probíhal od 1. 12. 2011 do 31. 1. 2012. Data byla sbírána standardizovaným dotazníkem Burnout Measure (BM) ? Test míry vyčerpání (Pines, Aronson, 1980). Výsledky: Bylo zjištěno, že celkovou míru výskytu syndromu vyhoření u sester pracujících na neurochirurgických odděleních v Moravskoslezském kraji lze z hlediska psychologie zdraví hodnotit jako uspokojivou. Příznaky syndromu vyhoření, které vykazovaly sestry na standardním oddělení a v ambulantním provozu, byly výraznější, než u sester pracujících na jednotkách intenzivní péče či spinální jednotce. Vyšší míra syndromu vyhoření byla potvrzena u starších sester, sester s nižším vzděláním, sester nespokojených se zaměstnáním a s oceněním práce a u sester s delší dobou praxe na neurochirurgickém pracovišti. Závěr: Přestože výsledky průzkumného šetření u sester neukazovaly na alarmující výskyt syndromu vyhoření, nelze tuto problematiku podceňovat. Důsledná osvěta týkající se preventivních a zvládacích mechanismů se ukazuje jako nezbytná, neboť práce sestry je spojena s větší mírou stresu než je tomu u většiny jiných profesí.

Abstract:

Aim: The main aim of this survey is to determine the incidence of burnout of nurses in Neurosurgical departments and to determine the link between the burnout and sociodemographic factors. Methodology: The exploratory sample consisted of 74 nurses working at the Neurosurgical departments of the Moravian Region hospitals ? University Hospital Ostrava and City Hospital Ostrava. The survey was conducted in these hospitals between 1. 12. 2011 and 31. 1. 2012. The data has been collected by utilising the standardized Burnout Measure (BM) ? Test degree of exhaustion (Pines, Aronson, 1980) questionnaire. Results: The exploratory investigation revealed, that the overall level of burnout among nurses working at Neurosurgical departments of the Moravian Region hospitals, in terms of psychological health, can be considered satisfactory. Burnout symptoms of nurses working on the ward, were more expressive than those of nurses working at the Intensive Care Unit or Spinal Unit. The higher rate of burnout was confirmed among older nurses, nurses with lower education, nurses dissatisfied with their job and their work evaluation and nurses with longer work experience. Conclusion: Although the results of this exploratory survey of nurses did not suggest an alarming incidence of burnout, this issue can not be underestimated. Thorough education on preventive and coping mechanisms appears necessary, because the nurses? job is associated with higher level of stress than the most of other professions.
