Prevalence of PTSD symptoms and coping strategies in integrated rescue system units

Abstract:

Cílem naší magisterské diplomové práce je ověřit vztah mezi užívanými copingovými strategiemi a výskytem symptomů posttraumatické stresové poruchy u 518 příslušníků základních složek IZS. K naplnění cíle dojdeme pomocí statistické analýzy kvantitativních dat, získaných pomocí online dotazníku, který sestává z PCL-5, SVF 78 a demografických otázek. Jako dílčí cíle jsme stanovili zjistit prevalenci symptomů PTSP u profesionálních hasičů, policistů a záchranářů a dále zmapovat jimi preferované copingové strategie. Teoretická část práce se postupně věnuje tématům stresu, copingu a integrovaného záchranného systému. Vycházíme z odborné literatury, kterou doplňujeme výsledky aktuálních výzkumů na toto téma. V rámci metodologické části práce stanovujeme tři výzkumné otázky a devět hypotéz. Zjistili jsme celkovou prevalenci symptomů PTSP v analyzovaném souboru 13,9 % (hasiči 9,3 %, policisté 16,9 %, záchranáři 19,7 %). U všech skupin jsme zaznamenali preferenci pozitivních copingových strategií, hlavně strategií kontroly. Ve všech případech jsme zjistili, že skór v dotazníku PCL-5 a negativní copingové strategie jsou ve statisticky významném pozitivním vztahu, lze tedy říci, že čím více budou respondenti užívat negativních strategií zvládání, tím dosáhnou vyššího výsledného skóru v dotazníku, který zjišťuje výskyt symptomů PTSP. Výsledky jsou na závěr diskutovány, uvádíme limity práce a přínos pro praxi.

Abstract:

The aim of our master's thesis is to verify the relationship among used coping strategies and the occurrence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder at 518 members of the units of the Integrated Rescue System using statistical analysis of quantitative data obtained using an online questionnaire consist of PCL-5, SVF 78 and demographic questions. We set ourselves partial goals to determine the prevalence of PTSD symptoms in firefighters, paramedics and police, we also focused on their preferred coping strategies. The theoretical part of the work gradually deals with the topics of stress, coping and the Integrated Rescue System. We are based on professional literature, which we supplement with the results of current research on this topic. Within the methodological part of the work, we set three research questions and nine hypotheses. We found the overall prevalence of symptoms in the analyzed group 13.9% (firefighters 9.3%, police officers 16.9%, paramedics 19.7%). In all groups, we found a preference for positive coping strategies, especially control strategies. In all cases, we found out that the score in the PCL-5 questionnaire and negative coping strategies are in a very strong positive relationship, so to say that the higher use of negative strategies, the higher final score in the questionnaire. The results are discussed, lastly, we present the limits of our research and the possibility of using knowledge in practice.
