The Religious Institutions of Ancient Rome

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou náboženských institucí v antickém Římě. Její ambicí je komplexně popsat systém uvedených institucí a poskytnout tak přehled o náboženském životě v antickém Římě. Vzhledem k problematice je použita metoda historicko-analytická. V práci je rovněž nastíněn historický vývoj Říma a charakter římské kultury. Je zde také uvedeno, které ostatní kultury a jakým způsobem, se podílely na výsledné podobě tohoto charakteru. Dále je uveden popis římské náboženské reality z hlediska kultu soukromého i kultu veřejného a povaha římského náboženství jako celku. Pozornost je věnována jednotlivým institucím a jejich místu v komplexním systému římského náboženství. Práce obsahuje popis římského pantheonu, zejména role jednotlivých bohů a způsobu jejich uctívání. Podrobně se věnuje římskému rituálu a jeho modalitám. Poslední kapitolu tvoří popis charakteru císařského kultu, včetně studie jeho kořenů a také studie jeho konkrétních projevů na vybraných osobách z římské historie. Výsledkem práce je komplexní popis náboženských institucí v antickém Římě.

Abstract:

This bachelor paper deals with the issue of religious institutions in the ancient Rome. The aim is to globally describe a system of the institutions mentioned above and give a brief overview of the religious life in the ancient Rome. In regard to this issue, the historical-analytical method was used. The historical development of Rome and character of Roman culture are one of the other crucial terms needed to be described. Moreover, the theoretical part includes the influence of other cultures and the way the character was created. Furthermore, there is a description of the Roman religious reality from the sacra publica and sacra privata points of view and the character of the Roman religion as a single unit as well. The paper focuses on single institutions and their positions in the complex system of Roman religion. Roman pantheon, especially the role of individual gods and the way they were worshipped are also explained. The Roman rite and its means are described in various details. The last chapter contains a summary of the imperial cult, including the study of its roots and exhibits within persons sampled from Roman history. The outcome of this paper is a complex description of Roman religious institutions.
