The Depiction of British Society in The Buddha of Suburbia

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o sociálních problémech Velké Británie v 70. letech jak je znázorňuje román Buddha z předměstí, který napsal Hanif Kureishi. Hlavním hrdinou románu je Karim Amir, mladý muž anglicko-indického původu, který při hledání své identity a touhy někam patřit prochází různými společenskými vrstvami a čelí četným sociálním problémům, které slouží jako podklad výkladu stavu tehdejší Británie. Sedmdesátá léta byla dekádou sociálních nepokojů způsobených hospodářskou krizí, defektní politikou, nezaměstnaností, přistěhovalectvím a nerovností pohlaví. Cílem práce je analyzovat jak autor popisuje sedmdesátá léta pomocí metody důkladného čtení, komentování a vysvětlování autorova zobrazení pomocí relevantních zdrojů historicky se zaoberajících uvedeným desetiletím. Práce se zaměřuje na čtyři hlavní problémy, se kterými se Karim setkává, a to rasismus, nerovnost třídního systému, rozdíl v životě na předměstí a ve městě a spolu úzce související sexualita a feminismus.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with social issues Great Britain faced in the 1970s as depicted in the novel The Buddha of Suburbia written by Hanif Kureishi. The protagonist of the novel, Karim Amir, is a young man of Anglo-Indian descent who, on a search for his identity and belonging, passes through various social spheres and faces numerous social problems which serve as a base for the commentary of the state of contemporary Britain. The seventies were a decade of social unrest due to the economic crisis, flawed politics, unemployment, immigration and gender inequality. The aim of the thesis is to analyse how the author illustrates the 1970s by using a method of close reading, commenting on and explaining his depiction by using relevant sources historically portraying the given decade. The thesis focuses on four major problems Karim is encountered with, namely racism, social class inequality, the difference in the life in the suburbs and in the city, and closely related sexuality and feminism.
