Profile of mental health in the forgiving and unforgiving persons

Abstract:

V této magisterské diplomové práci se zabýváme tématem odpouštění v kontextu duševního zdraví. Cílem práce je zmapovat rozdíly v duševním zdraví u odpouštějících a neopouštějících osob. Odpouštění zkoumáme jako osobnostní dispozici. Ověřujeme ho jako celek, ale také se zaměřujeme na rozdíly mezi dvěma jeho typy (odpouštění sobě a odpouštění druhým). Oblast duševního zdraví zavádíme do výzkumné části pomocí čtyř proměnných (pozitivní duševní zdraví, kvalita mezilidských vztahů, rys depresivity a rys úzkostnosti). V rámci práce přezkoumáváme i rozdíly mezi jednotlivými typy pozitivního duševního zdraví (psychologický, emocionální a sociální well-being) a zjišťujeme, která z výše jmenovaných proměnných nejlépe predikuje pozitivní duševní zdraví. Teoretická část práce obsahuje konceptualizaci zkoumaných konstruktů, konkrétně duševního zdraví, odpouštění, mezilidských vztahů, úzkosti a deprese. Ve výzkumné části práce se prostřednictvím kvantitativní analýzy zaměřujeme na zodpovězení výzkumných otázek a ověření stanovených hypotéz. Výzkumný soubor je tvořen 331 respondenty z české populace ve věku od 16 do 69 let. Použité výzkumné nástroje, u kterých byla ověřována reliabilita ve smyslu vnitřní konzistence a u nichž byla též identifikována struktura dat, jsou následující: Heartland Forgiveness Scale (Thompson, Snyder, Hoffman, 2005), Mental Health Continuum Scale – Short Form (Keyes, 2002), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, 1983), State Trai Depression Inventory (Spielberger, 2003), Psychological Well-being Scales - Positive Relations With Others (Ryff, 1989). Naše výsledky ukázaly, že rys odpouštění statisticky významně souvisí se všemi zkoumanými proměnnými. Byl prokázán pozitivní středně těsný vztah mezi rysem odpouštění a pozitivním duševním zdravím i kvalitou mezilidských vztahů. Mezi rysem odpouštění a rysem úzkostnosti existuje negativní velmi těsný vztah. Mezi rysem odpouštění a rysem depresivity se prokázal také negativní vztah, ale středně těsný. Výsledky odhalily těsnější vztah mezi rysem odpouštění sobě a zbylými zkoumanými proměnnými než mezi rysem odpouštění druhým a těmito proměnnými. Z tří zkoumaných typů pozitivního duševního zdraví se nejtěsnější vztahy vůči zbylým zkoumaným proměnným ukázaly u psychologického well-beingu. Jako nejsilnější prediktor pozitivního duševního zdraví se ukázal rys depresivity. V práci se dále podrobněji zmiňujeme o odlišnostech respondentů v míře rysu odpouštění dle vybraných demografických proměnných.

Abstract:

In this master diploma thesis we deal with the theme of forgiveness in the context of mental health. The aim is to map the differences in the mental health of forgiving and unforgiving persons. We examine forgiveness as a personality trait. We verify it in its entirety, but we also focus on the differences between the two types of forgiveness (forgiveness of self and forgiveness of others). We introduce mental health into the research part with four variables (positive mental health, quality of interpersonal relationships, trait depression and trait anxiety). In this work we examine the differences between the types of positive mental health (psychological, emotional and social well-being) and we try to find out which of the mentioned variables is the best predictor of positive mental health. The theoretical part includes the conceptualization of the studied constructs, specifically mental health, forgiveness, interpersonal relationships, anxiety and depression. In the research part, we focus on the answers of the research questions through quantitative analysis and we verify hypotheses. Study sample consists of 331 respondents from the Czech population aged 16 to 69 years. We use research tools that have been tested for reliability in terms of internal consistency and for which were also identified data structure: Heartland Forgiveness Scale (Thompson, Snyder, Hoffman, 2005), Mental Health Continuum Scale - Short Form (Keyes, 2002) State Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, 1983), State Trai Depression Inventory (Spielberger, 2003), Psychological Well-being Scales - Positive Relations With Others (Ryff, 1989). Our results showed that a forgiveness trait is significantly associated with all the studied variables. The results reveal a positive medium association between forgiveness and level of positive mental health and quality of interpersonal relationships. Between the forgiveness trait and anxiety trait there is a negative very close association. Between the forgiveness trait and depression trait there is a negative association too, but it is medium. The results revealed a closer relationship between the forgiveness of self and the remaining studied variables than between the forgiveness of others and these variables. From the three examined types of positive mental health there is the closest association between psychological well-being and the rest of the examined variables. The strongest predictor of positive mental health is depression trait. In this work there are further mentioned the differences in respondents' level of trait forgiveness according to selected demographic variables.
