Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na dva z nejvíce obskurních románů od autorky Jeanette Winterson – Gut Symmetries a The Stone Gods. Obecně vzato jsou akademické diskuze o dílech této spisovatelky ve svém záběru značně omezené. Proto je hlavním účelem této práce prozkoumat široký rozsah její tvorby, který ještě stále nebyl (plně) odhalen. Konkrétně má pak tato diplomová práce za cíl zevrubně analyzovat neobvyklý způsob, jakým Winterson ve výše uvedených dílech ztvárňuje kapitalistickou ideologii. S využitím ukázek textů získaných z primárních zdrojů, společně s množstvím relevantních teoretických zdrojů, bude prokázán nezpochybnitelný fakt, že v očích Jeanette Winterson je kapitalismus vysoce toxickým socioekonomickým systémem, který může nenapravitelně poškodit lidstvo. Úvodní část práce se zaobírá především rozsahem dříve napsaných akademických prací, které pojednávají o díle Jeanette Winterson. Tato sekce jasně dokazuje, že jak Gut Symmetries, tak i The Stone Gods z hlediska kritického přijetí zůstaly takřka nepovšimnuty. Druhá kapitola zdůrazňuje nutnost zvážit autorčinu sbírku esejí Art Objects jakožto ideologického předchůdce obou zkoumaných novel. Následně se tato práce dále posune k rozboru složitých nuancí autorčiny otevřené kritiky kapitalismu v díle The Stone Gods. Předposlední oddíl pak pokračuje v analýze stejného tématu, ovšem se zaměřením na knihu Gut Symmetries. V závěru celé diplomové práce jsou nakonec stručně popsány a shrnuty průkazné výsledky celého výzkumu.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis zeroes in on two of the more obscure novels written by Jeanette Winterson – Gut Symmetries and The Stone Gods. By and large, the scholarly debate on Winterson’s output has suffered from a fairly limited purview. With this in mind, the paper’s overriding purpose is to survey the vast expanses of Winterson’s writing which have yet to be (fully) explored. More specifically, the dissertation aims to examine the writer’s intriguing representation of the capitalist ideology in the novels at hand. Utilizing textual evidence gathered from the primary sources, as well as a multitude of informed theoretical sources, the paper endeavors to prove beyond doubt that capitalism, as seen through Winterson’s eyes, is a highly toxic socioeconomic system capable of doing irrevocable damage to humanity. The opening segment is primarily concerned with the range of previous academic work on Winterson’s oeuvre. The section clearly demonstrates that both Gut Symmetries and The Stone Gods have largely flown under the radar in terms of their critical reception. The second chapter asserts the necessity of considering Winterson’s collection of essays Art Objects as the ideological progenitor of the novels under review. Afterwards, the paper moves on to discuss the intricate nuances of the writer’s outspoken criticism of capitalism in The Stone Gods. The penultimate section scrutinizes the selfsame issue, but with particular regard to Gut Symmetries. In the final part of the dissertation, the conclusive results of the research are succinctly outlined.
