Modern authoritarianism - Contribution to systematization of actual discussion

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá konceptem tzv. moderního autoritářství, jenž představuje formu vládnutí typickou pro nedemokratické režimy ve 21. století. Práce se pokouší zachytit dosavadní podobu diskuze moderního autoritářství, která nastupuje do centra pozornosti výzkumníků, po vyčerpání předchozí diskuze o hybridních režimech. Jedním z úkolů textu je tak poukázat na rozdíly mezi těmito dvěma diskuzemi, především pak zdůraznit nedostatky diskuze o hybridních režimech a některé z příčin proč byla nahrazena diskuzí novou. Hlavní zájem textu je ale především přinést přehledovou studii o současné podobě diskuze o moderních autoritativních režimech. Výchozím textem se stává příspěvek T. Roylance The Twilight of ‘Modern Authoritarianism‘, jehož rozdělení nástrojů moderních autoritářství do pěti sfér – ekonomické, mediální, politické soutěže, občanské společnosti a práva – tímto je určena hlavní osnova práce. V té text snaží přinést jednotlivé autorské vstupy, argumenty a koncepty, právě vycházející z těchto pěti sfér. Závěrem této práce je tak určit jaké nástroje moderní autoritářství využívají ke své legitimizaci a jak k těmto nástrojům přistupují různí autoři při tvorbě svých konceptů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with concept of modern authoritarianism, which defines modern type of rule in nondemocratic regimes of 21st century. The paper is trying to catch current state of discussion of modern authoritarianism, which is getting into the center of focus of researchers, after exhaustion of previous discussion about hybrid regimes. One of the goals of the text is to show the differences between these two discussions, especially to stress problems of discussion about hybrid regimes and to show some of the reasons why it was replaced by the new discussion. Main goal of the text if to provide overview about current state of the discussion about modern authoritarianisms. The thesis is based on the article by T. Roylance The Twilight of ‘Modern Authoritarianism‘, who divides usage of tools used by modern authoritarianism into five spheres – economic, medial, political competition, civil society and the rule of law – this is setting the main outline for the next text. In this part, the text is trying to provide particular authors´ reports, arguments and concepts, which are based in these five spheres. Conclusion of this thesis is to define what tools do modern authoritarian regimes use for their legitimization and how are these tools viewed by different authors in creating of their concepts.
