Name of thesis: An Assessment of the Assortment of Nursery Plants of Old and Regional Varieties of Apple and Pear Trees in a Specific Region of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zhodnocením sortimentu „starých“ a „krajových“ odrůd jabloní a hrušní v ovocných školkách na Moravě. Nejdříve jsou definovány samotné pojmy „stará“ a „krajová“ odrůda a také důvody, proč jsou tyto odrůdy množeny a vysazovány. Následně jsou po stránce klimatické, topografické i pedologické nastíněny podmínky lokalit, ve kterých se zkoumané školky nacházejí. Jsou rozebrány nároky jabloní i hrušní včetně jejich rajonizace, poté je zmíněna rajonizace jednotlivých odrůd a také jejich přítomnost v historických sortimentech. Následně jsou popsány tvary školkařských výpěstků a charakterizovány základní podnože jabloní a hrušní, stejně tak jako odrůdy, jež byly ve školkách nabízeny, a to po stránce růstové a z hlediska jejich nároků na polohu. V kapitole „Výsledky“ jsou uvedeny nabídky, které se ve zkoumaných školkách na podzim 2019 vyskytovaly a tyto údaje jsou s odkazem na odbornou literaturu v kapitole „Diskuse“ okomentovány a zhodnoceny. Přílohy obsahují kompletní popisy nabízených „starých“ a „krajových“ odrůd jabloní a hrušní nabízených ve školkách, které jsou doplněny obrázky plodů těchto odrůd, případně i habitem stromů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to assess the range of both "old" and "regional" varieties of apple and pear trees in fruit tree nurseries in Moravia. The first part of the thesis defines the terms "old" and "regional" varieties and discusses reasons why such varieties are propagated and grown. The following parts of the thesis deal with local conditions of nurseries discussed in this work in terms of their climate, topography and pedology. Further, apple and pear trees are analysed from the point of view of their requirements for growing and hardiness zones. Individual varieties are also discussed in terms of zones and their inclusion in historical assortments. The following chapters describe and characterize various shapes of nursery plants, basic rootstocks of apple and pear trees as well as varieties that have been on offer in the discussed nurseries in terms of their growth and location requirements. The chapter "Findings" presents varieties offered in the discussed tree nurseries in the autumn of 2019 and the data are later commented on and analysed in the chapter “Discussion” with reference to academic literature. The appendices include comprehensive descriptions of the specific "old" and "regional" varieties of apple and pear trees in the referred tree nurseries. Furthermore, there are images of the fruits of such varieties as well as habits of such trees, if available.
