The West Front of the St. Vitus Cathedral: The Sculptural Decoration focusing on the Bronze Doors

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá sochařskou výzdobou západního průčelí katedrály sv. Víta v Praze. V první části se zaměřuje na původní návrhy stavitelů chrámu Josefa Mockera a Kamila Hilberta a jejich realizaci. Těžiště práce ovšem spočívá v druhé části, v ikonografickém a uměleckohistorickém rozboru bronzových dveří autorů Vratislava H. Brunnera a Otakara Španiela jakožto nejpozoruhodnějšího díla západního průčelí po stránce tematické i uměleckého zpracování.

Abstract:

This bachelor work deals with the sculptural decoration of the west front of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The first part deals with the original projects of its builders - Josef Mocker and Kamil Hilbert - and its realization. The main focus of the work, however, lies in the second part comprising the iconographical and historical-artistic analysis of the bronze doors, the work of Vratislav H. Brunner and Otakar Španiel, as the most remarkable work of the west front both in iconography and artistic implementation.
