Blockchain Technology in Traditional vs. Decentralized Finance: Use Cases, Drivers of Adoption, and Future Prospects

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá roli blockchainu ve financích porovnáním jeho využití v DeFi a tradičních financích (TradFi). Hodnotí, zda blockchain přináší měřitelné přínosy v efektivitě, transparentnosti a přístupu, a zda jsou tyto přínosy využitelné v tradičních institucích. Na základě smíšeného výzkumu - rešerše literatury, analýzy 3 888 článků, on-chain dat (2019-2026) a rozhovorů s odborníky - poskytuje teoretické i empirické poznatky. Výsledky ukazují, že DeFi vytvořilo transparentní a inovativní ekosystém, ale čelí omezením, jako je nadměrné zajištění a škálovatelnost. V TradFi je adopce selektivní, zejména v oblastech, kde současné systémy nestačí, například u přeshraničních plateb. Závěr ukazuje, že adopce blockchainu je závislá na kontextu. Neadopce je často racionální a trendy směřují k selektivní integraci, nikoli k úplné transformaci tradičních financí.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the role of blockchain in finance by comparing its applications in DeFi and TradFi. It evaluates whether blockchain delivers measurable benefits in efficiency, transparency, and access, and whether these can be adopted by traditional institutions. Using a mixed-methods approach - including a literature review, analysis of 3,888 academic papers, on-chain data (2019-2026), and expert interviews - the study provides theoretical and empirical insights. Findings show that DeFi has built a transparent and innovative financial ecosystem but faces limitations such as overcollateralisation and scalability. In TradFi, adoption remains selective, mainly in areas like cross-border payments where existing systems are insufficient. The thesis concludes that blockchain adoption is context-dependent. Non-adoption is often rational, and current trends point toward selective integration rather than full transformation of traditional finance.
