Using machine learning to optimize attack strategies

Abstract:

Improvements in the algorithms based on reinforcement learning made creation of more sophisticated AIs possible. Different solutions have been made to automate the network defence mechanisms with the help of these new technologies. Optimisation of the attacking strategies is thus also an important topic. Current solutions have mostly covered specific attacks like DDOS, or were simulated within very basic environments, that are unlike the real networks. With the creation of simulator of Session-level Adversary Intent-Driven Cyberattack Simulator, it should be possible to implement an environment on which we can test the optimisation of attacking strategies, with more complicated chains of actions, which are more similar to the real network behaviour of rational attacker. This work covers implementation of this environment in gym framework and also testing of some RL algorithms within this environment.

Abstract:

Zlepšenia v algoritmoch pracujúcich na princípe učenia sa na základe spätnej väzby umožnili vytvorenie oveľa schopnejších umelých inteligencií. Rôzne riešenia sa snažia automatizovať obranu siete s využitím týchto nových technológií. Optimalizácia útočných stratégií je teda taktiež zaujímavou témou. Doterajšie riešenia zatiaľ pokrývali veľmi špecifické časti útokov (ako napr. DDOS), alebo boli simulované na veľmi jednoduchých prostrediach, ktoré sa nepodobajú reálnym sieťam. Vzniknutím simulátora kybernetických útokov je však možné preskúmať možnosti implementácie prostredia, na ktorom možno testovať optimalizácie súvislej postupnosti komplikovanejších akcií, ktoré vernejšie reprezentujú reálny postup racionálneho útočnika. V tejto práci sú preskúmané možnosti implementácie tohto prostredia vo frameworku gym a taktiež otestovanie rôznych algoritmov na tomto prostredí.
