Towards an Alexandrian Text: Cavafy, Forster, Durrell

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o formování diskurzu kosmopolitní egyptské Alexandrie v první polovině 20. století, utvářeném v textech Konstantina P. Kavafise, E. M. Forstera a Lawrence Durrella. Její teoretická východiska se opírají o postkoloniální studia, literární topologii a teorii žánru. Díla těchto tří autorů jsou umístěna do kulturně-historických kontextů a srovnávána se zvláštním přihlédnutím k otázkám historismu, helenismu, erotismu, duchovna a také strategiím, kterými je vytvářen obraz kulturně různorodého prostředí.

Abstract:

The work comments on the formation of the discourse of the cosmopolitan city of Alexandria, Egypt, in the first half of the 20th century, generated within texts written by Constantine P. Cavafy, E. M. Forster, and Lawrence Durrell. Its theoretical foundation is derived from postcolonial studies, literary topology, and genre criticism. The discussion places the works of the three authors in their respective cultural and historical contexts, and compares them with particular respect to the issues of historicism, Hellenism, eroticism, spirituality, as well as strategies of conceptualizing a culturally heterogeneous milieu.
