Determination of elastic and plastic material properties of oak wood in relation to moisture

Abstract:

Účelem této práce je poskytnout konzistentní materiálové vstupy pro aplikaci v moderním navrhování dřevěných konstrukcí s využitím pokročilých nástrojů numerické analýzy. V dostupné odborné literatuře jsou kompletní sady relevantních materiálových parametrů dřeva dubu (Quercus, sp.) při různých rovnovážných vlhkostech dřeva zcela ojedinělé. Proto byly experimentální zkoušky v tahu a tlaku ve všech třech principiálních anatomických směrech prováděny v rozsahu vlhkosti odpovídajícím proměnlivosti povětrnostních podmínek během roku. Celý rozsah byl rozdělen na 5 úrovní vlhkosti, a to 0, 6, 12, 18 a 25 % rovnovážné vlhkosti dřeva. Variabilita vlastností v rámci druhu byla ošetřena zpracováním dřeva z 21 dubových kmenů. Statistické zpracování výsledků prokázalo nízkou citlivost některých materiálových charakteristik na obsah vlhkosti ve dřevě v rozmezí 0 – 12 %. U Poissonových čísel nebyl objeven žádný trend s měnící se vlhkostí. Dále byly pozorovány statisticky významné rozdíly v materiálových charakteristikách stanovených při zatížení tahem a tlakem. Tyto poznatky rozšiřují využitelnost sofistikovaných nástrojů při navrhování dřevěných konstrukcí.

Abstract:

The purpose of the thesis is to provide consistent material inputs for application in modern designing of wooden structures by using of advanced tools of numerical analysis. In the available literature, complete sets of relevant material parameters of oak wood (Quercus, sp.) at different moisture content levels are unique. Therefore, experimental tests in tension and compression in all three principal anatomical directions of wood were performed in the range of relative humidity corresponding to the variability of weather conditions during the year. The whole range was divided into 5 levels of equilibrium moisture content (EMC), and they are 0, 6, 12, 18 and 25 % of EMC. The variability of properties within the oak species was covered by processing wood from 21 oak logs. Statistical processing of the results showed low sensitivity of some material characteristics to EMC variability in the range of 0 - 12%. No trend with varying moisture content was found for Poisson's ratios. Furthermore, statistically significant differences in material characteristics determined under tensile and compressive loads were observed. This knowledge extends the applicability of sophisticated tools in the designing of wooden structures.
