Historical GIS of Ostrava on the example of workers' colonies

Abstract:

Historický GIS Ostravy na příkladu dělnických kolonií Bakalářská práce se zabývá dělnickými koloniemi vybudovanými od poloviny 19. století do poloviny 20. století na území města Ostravy. V první části popisuje obecné aspekty, rozpracovává fyzické struktury a socioekonomické charakteristiky kolonií, jejich vznik, vývoj a zánik v důsledku chátrání z důvodu nedostatečné údržby či vandalismu nebo v důsledku demolice. Srovnává vybrané území v definovaném období s obdobím 21. století, identifikuje odlišné rysy. V druhé části práce za pomoci literatury, archivních dokumentů, stavebních plánů a map analyzuje logiku prostorového rozložení kolonií a jeho proměnlivost v daném období. V geografickém informačním systému je propojena prostorová složka s atributovými údaji a zároveň je rekonstruován prostorový rozsah dělnických kolonií na současném území města Ostravy, čemuž ještě předchází vytvoření geografické databáze na základě historických kartografických dokumentů. Výsledky jsou poté prezentovány veřejnosti v podobě mapy zobrazené v prostředí ArcGIS online, přičemž mapa má ulehčit přístupnost informací širší veřejnosti a umožnit identifikaci rozmístění a rozsahu dělnických kolonií z období od poloviny 19. století do poloviny 20. století nad současnými kartografickými dokumenty 21. století. Vzhledem k omezenému rozsahu teoretické části práce nerozpracovává detailně všechny ostravské dělnické kolonie.

Abstract:

Historical GIS of Ostrava on the example of worker´s colonies The bachelor thesis is about worker´s colonies built since the middle of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century on the territory of Ostrava city. The first part describes general aspects, elaborates physical structures and socioeconomic characteristics of colonies, their origin, development and extinction because of deterioration due to insufficient maintenance or vandalism or demolition. It compares the selected area in the defined period with the 21st century, identifying different features. In the second part of the work with the help of literature, archival documents, building plans and maps analyzes the logic of spatial distribution of colonies and its variability in a given period. The geographic information system interconnects the spatial component with the attribute data and reconstructs the spatial extent of the worker´s colonies in the present territory of Ostrava, which is preceded by the creation of a geographical database based on historical cartographic documents. The results are then presented to the public in the form of a map displayed in ArcGIS online, with the aim of facilitating the accessibility of information to the wider public and enabling identification of the location and extent of worker´s colonies from the middle of 19th century to the middle of 20th century. Due to the limited extent of the theoretical part of the thesis, it does not elaborate in detail all the worker´s colonies in Ostrava.
