Language Propaedeutics: Designing Activities to Prepare Young Learners for Foreign Language Learning

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá úvodem žáků do učení cizích jazyků skrze jazykovou propedeutiku, která má žákům pomoci vyvinout pozitivní postoj vůči učení cizích jazyků, přijetí a porozumění jiných kultur a touto cestou je připravit na jejich budoucí život v multikulturní Evropě. Tato práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou, která je založená na dostupných převážně oborově-didaktických zdrojích, s cílem zmapovat již zmíněné výzkumné pole a část praktickou, která obsahuje originální aktivity vytvořené na základě principu jazykové propedeutiky, autorčiných pozorování a hodnocení odučených hodin a zpětné vazby od učitelů, kteří ve svých třídách s vytvořenými aktivitami pracovali. Pro tento výzkum bylo vybráno pět tříd, jedna třída z každého ročníku prvního stupně základní školy, které byly vystaveny výuce postavené na originálních aktivitách vytvořených na základě přípravy na výuku jazyků a tematických plánů pro jednotlivé ročníky. Hodiny zahrnující tyto aktivity byly odučeny třídními učiteli a autorka této práce prováděla přímé pozorování každé z těchto hodin. Třídní učitelé poté poskytli autorce zpětnou vazbu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on introducing learners to foreign language learning through language propaedeutics which should help them develop a positive stance toward learning foreign languages, accepting and understanding different cultures and therefore prepare them for living in a multicultural Europe. The thesis consists of a theoretical part, based primarily on resources related to specific subject didactics, aiming to map the research field in question, and an empirical part, presenting originally designed activities based on the language propaedeutics principles, the researcher’s observation, and evaluation of the lessons and feedback from the teachers performing the activities in their lessons. Five classes were chosen as the research sample, one class of each grade of primary school, in which the originally designed activities were based on the topics covered in the curriculum of each grade. The classes were taught by their regular class teachers and observed by the researcher. Feedback from the teachers was obtained after each lesson.
