Glass ceiling: opportunities and barriers of women in management positions in selected organizations in tourism sector

Anotácia:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na problematiku skleněného stropu, možnosti a bariéry žen při dosahování řídících funkcí ve sféře cestovního ruchu. Cílem práce je odpovědět na hlavní výzkumnou otázku, která zní: „Jaké jsou možnosti a bariéry žen při dosahování řídících funkcí ve vybraných organizacích cestovního ruchu z pohledu žen samotných?“. Teoretická část se v úvodu zabývá genderovou segregací na trhu práce, včetně popisu segregace horizontální i vertikální. Dále popisujeme genderové stereotypy a předsudky, hovoříme o možnostech harmonizace práce a rodiny a v neposlední řadě také zmiňujeme možné individuální preference a strategie žen. V závěru teoretické části se zabýváme genderem v organizaci, organizační kulturou a konceptem rovných příležitostí. K zodpovězení výzkumných otázek využíváme kvalitativní výzkumnou strategii a samotný sběr dat probíhá formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. V metodologické části hovoříme také o samotném výzkumném vzorku a procesu jeho výběru. Nechybí také zmínka o možných omezeních výzkumu a jeho etice. Závěrečná empirická část představu samotnou analýzu a interpretaci získaných dat. V závěrečné diskusi odpovídáme na hlavní výzkumnou otázku a navrhujeme konkrétní intervence.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the issues of the glass ceiling, opportunities and barriers in achieving managerial functions in the sphere of tourism. The aim is to answer the main research question: “What are the opportunities and barriers in achieving managerial positions in selected tourism organizations from the perspective of women themselves?". The theoretical part deals with the introduction of gender segregation in the labor market, including a description of horizontal and vertical segregation. Next, we describe the gender stereotypes and prejudices, we are talking about the possibility of harmonizing work and family, and last but not least, we mention possible individual preferences and strategies of women. At the end of the theoretical part we deal with gender in organizations, organizational culture and the concept of equal opportunities. To answer the research questions, we use qualitative research strategy and data collection itself takes the form of semi-structured interviews. In the methodological part we are talking also about the actual sample size, and the process of its choice. There is also mention of the possible limitations of the research and its ethics. The final part introduces the empirical analysis and interpretation of the data obtained. In the final discussion we answer the main research question and a specific intervention.
