Galician Slaughter in 1846 - historical context and reflection

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl seznámit české prostředí s polským národním povstáním roku 1846 a následnou selskou vzpourou, během které bylo na území střední a západní Haliče brutálně povražděno přes tisíc osob, převážně šlechticů. Tyto tragické události se pro svou krvavost zapsaly do polských dějin jako tzv. haličská řež. Práce si všímá nejen historického kontextu a průběhu obou povstání, ale také jejich pozdější reflexe v historiografii.

Abstract:

The so-called Galician slaughter, which took place immediately after the suppressed Kraków Uprising of 1846, is remembered in Poland as one of the bloodiest peasant revolts in Polish history. Over a thousand people were killed, most of them being Polish nobles. In spite of this, the events of 1846 remain almost completely unknown to Czech historians and public alike. The aim of this thesis is therefore to popularize this tragic part of Polish history by providing a detailed description of the course of both uprisings and then examining the historiography since written on the topic.
