Work safely, produce more: Analysis of the Czech short film production in years 1945–1959 with the theme of mechanization of industry and occupational safety

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá českou krátkometrážní produkcí průmyslových filmů v 50. letech. Zaměřuje se na otázky týkající se typů těchto filmů, jejich charakteristických rysů, systému jejich výroby v Československu, jejich funkcí a jak pracují jako nástroje průmyslu. Pomocí popisu dobového vývoje české kinematografie tato práce nabízí také kontextuální ukotvení průmyslových filmů. Dále prostřednictvím filmové analýzy a studia pramenů odkrývá, jak filmy pracují s rétorikou a stylem a jak se v nich projevuje dobová ideologie a hospodářská politika. Metodologie je založena na seriální filmové analýze podpořené kontextuálním přístupem, kterou navrhuje Yvonne Zimmermannová, na analýze průmyslových filmů Vinzenze Hedigera a Patricka Vonderaua a na přístupu nových filmových historiků. Práce se neptá po tvůrci a umělecké hodnotě díla. Namísto toho ji více zajímá funkce, kterou tyto filmy plnily ve specifickém historickém okamžiku a kontextu. Tato bakalářská práce je příspěvkem k opomíjeným dějinám české nonfikční tvorby. Snaží se osvětlit alespoň část české poválečné nonfikční produkce.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the Czech industrial production of short films in the 50s years. It focuses on issues related to these types of films, the characteristic features of their production in Czechoslovakia, their functions and how they work as a tool of industry. With the description of the development of post-war Czech cinema, this work also provides contextual anchor for industrial films. In addition, through film analysis and study of sources it reveals how movies use rhetoric and style and if they reflected contemporary ideology and economic policy. The methodology is based upon serial film analysis supported by a contextual approach proposed by Yvonne Zimmermann, analysis of industrial films by Vinzenz Hediger and Patrick Vonderau and new film historians' access. Thesis does not ask the creators and artistic value. Instead, it is more interested in the functions that these films perform in a specific historical moment and context. This thesis is a contribution to the neglected history of Czech nonfiction production. It seeks to shed light on at least part of the Czech post-war nonfiction production.
