Petroarchaeological investigation of so called other lithic industry from Tell Arbid Abyad in Syria

Abstract:

Na lokalitě Tell Arbid Abyad byla archeologickým výzkumem zachycena pozdně neolitická osada a s ní související artefakty a manuporty, které zahrnují také ostatní kamennou industrii. Protože přímo na lokalitě neexistují zdroje kamenných surovin, musely být všechny pevné horniny doneseny člověkem. Většinu kolekce tvoří ostrohranné úlomky a valouny karbonátových hornin nejasné funkce. Jejich předpokládané zdroje se nachází do dvaceti kilometrů od lokality. Méně zastoupené bazaltové horniny jsou dominantní surovinou artefaktů a jejich provenience je na základě provedených analýz předpokláda v oblasti bazaltové plošiny Hemma.

Abstract:

Excavation on the Tell Arbid Abyad detected Late Neolithic settlement features containing also so called other lithic industry. All compact rocks were imported to the Tell Arbid Abyad as a consequence of human activity. The majority of the collection is comprised of angular carbonate rock chips and pebbles of unclear function. The nearest local sources of carbonate rock are an alluvial fan ten kilometres to the North and in the sediments of streams lying at the Syrian/Turkish border. On the other hand, basaltic rocks are dominant among the artefacts and they have origin probably around basalt plateau Hemma
