A Foreignizing Project Inspired by L. Venuti and a Comparative Study Based on a Translation Experiment

Abstract:

Diplomová práce shrnuje teorii překladové foreignizace Lawrence Venutiho se zvláštním zaměřením na vývin jeho myšlenek, kritiku a podobnosti s názory Jiřího Levého. Na tomto teoretickém základě dále práce pokládá otázku, zdali je Venutiho koncept relevantní i v českém literárním kontextu, a odpověď se snaží nalézt pomocí analýzy čtenářských zpětných vazeb na foreignizovanou a domestikovanou verzi překladu stejného výchozího úryvku. Překlady jsou vyhotoveny autorem této práce, použitý úryvek pochází z novely Timbuktu od Paula Austera, amerického spisovatele nevšedního stylu psaní.

Abstract:

This Thesis summarizes Lawrence Venuti's theory of foreignizing translation strategy, taking into special account development of his thoughts over time, criticism of his work and analogies with Jiří Levý's theory. On the basis of this theoretical background, the Thesis furthermore poses a question whether Venuti’s propositions are relevant to the Czech literary context and seeks to answer this question by analyzing readers' feedback on a foreignized and a domesticated translation of the same source text excerpt. While the translations are made by the author of this Thesis, the source text is taken out from a novel called Timbuktu by Paul Auster, an American author of a strikingly unique style of writing.
