Psychoplastic Space in Josef Svoboda's Scenography. Creative and Technical Design in Productions of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaobírá rekonstrukcemi výtvarně-technických řešení, které vytvořil významný český scénograf Josef Svoboda ke třem inscenacím hudebního dramatu Richarda Wagnera Tristan a Isolda. Tyto inscenace byly uvedeny v Hessisches Statsstheater Wiesbaden (1967) a v Opernhaus v Kolíně nad Rýnem (1971), ve Festspielhaus v Bayreuthu (1974) a v Grand Theatre v Ženevě (1978). Účelem práce je na základě pramenného výzkumu i studia sekundární literatury podat komplexní výklad scénografické složky těchto uvedení. V práci je prověřováno, že při jejich inscenování Svoboda systematicky uplatňoval vlastní koncept psychoplastického prostoru a rozvíjel inscenační postupy Laterny magiky a polyekranu založené na technologii multimédií. Podstata těchto inscenací tedy spočívala v sofistikovaném použití rozličných typů promítaných obrazů a projekčních ploch. Obrazy, které byly v prostoru všelijak vrstveny vytvářely nejen jednotlivá scénická prostředí, ale společně s jednáním protagonistů na scéně vyjadřovaly nejrůznější situace. V některých scénách barevně i světelně proměnlivé obrazy znázorňovaly myšlenky a emoce a tak dokonce zastupovaly dramatické postavy. Podstatným hlediskem této práce je skutečnost, že autor výše uvedených scénografií Josef Svoboda je považován za jednoho z nejvýznačnějších scénografů dvacátého století, ustavitele oboru scénografie jenž se výraznou měrou podílel i na jeho kritické reflexi. V teoretické části práce je proto Svobodovo pojetí scénografie nahlíženo v dějinném kontextu divadla od počátku dvacátého století. Jsou zde mapovány především ty tendence, na které Svoboda navázal svou formulací psychoplastického prostoru, v praxi pak kinetickou, zejména světelnou scénografií. Prostřednictvím Svobodových scénografií k Tristanovi a Isoldě, které jsou v práci představeny, jako modely výše uvedených inscenačních postupů je v práci dále demonstrováno jakým způsobem scénograf tyto své metody rozvíjel při inscenování téhož titulu v časovém rozmezí více než jednoho desetiletí. Zasazením jednotlivých inscenací Tristana a Isoldy, ke kterým vytvořil Josef Svoboda své scénografie do kontextu nejvýznamnějších uvedení tohoto díla od jeho světové premiéry, až po nejnovější bayreuthskou inscenaci Kathariny Wagner z roku 2015 je v práci definován scénografův dějinný přínos, při inscenování tohoto díla.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis deals with the reconstructions of the artistic and technical solutions, which were created by the prominent Czech stage designer Josef Svoboda for three productions of the Richard Wagner’s musical drama Tristan und Isolde. These productions were performed at the Hessisches Statsstheater in Wiesbaden (1967) and in the Cologne Opernhaus (1971), the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth (1974) and the Grand Theatre in Geneva (1978). The aim of the thesis is to provide a complex interpretation of the scenographic component of these performances based on source research and secondary literature study. It is verified in the thesis that Svoboda systematically applied his own concept of psychoplastic space and developed the techniques of Magician's Lantern (Laterna Magika) and polyecran based on multimedia technology. The essence of these productions was a sophisticated use of various types of projected images and projection surfaces. The images that were layered in the space created not only individual scenic environments, but together with the protagonists' actions on the stage, they expressed various situations. In some scenes, images variable both in colour and light depicted thoughts and emotions, and so thus represented dramatic characters. The main point of view of this thesis is the fact that the author of the above-mentioned scenography works, Josef Svoboda, is considered one of the most prominent stage designers of the twentieth century, a creator of the field of stage design, which also played a significant role in his critical reflection. In the theoretical part of the thesis, Svoboda's concept of scenography is viewed in the historical context of theatre from the beginning of the twentieth century. The thesis maps mainly the tendencies that Svoboda follows in his formulation of psychoplastic space, and kinetic, especially light set design, in practice. Through Svoboda's scenographies to Tristan und Isolde, which are presented in the thesis as models of the above-mentioned staging techniques, the thesis further demonstrates in what way the stage designer developed these methods during the production of the same title over a period of more than a decade. By putting individual productions of Tristan und Isolde for which Josef Svoboda created his scenography into the context of the most significant performances of the work since its world premiere, to the latest Bayreuth production of 2015, the thesis defines the scenographer's historical contribution in the production of this work.
