Music and memory: Influence of background music on encoding and recall of words

Abstract:

Prvotní studií zkoumající vliv hudby na paměťové procesy byl experimentální výzkum S. M. Smitha (1985). Experimentálně zkoumal, jestli je paměť ovlivněna různým akustickým pozadím (instrumentální hudby a ticho). Předkládaná práce je konceptuální replikací studie S. M. Smitha (1985). Cílem experimentální studie bylo zjistit, zda existuje vztah mezi přítomností a nepřítomností hudby hrající na pozadí při zapamatování a vybavení a množstvím zapamatovaných slov. Dále zde byl vhodný prostor pro zjištění, zda má poslech hudby na stejném nebo změněném pozadí (kontextu) pozitivní, podporující nebo negativní, distrakční vliv na lidskou paměť, jelikož se předchozí výzkumy neshodují na jednom stanovisku. Vzorek 116 participantů (průměrný věk 21) se účastnil experimentu, skládajícího se z Paměťového testu učení (Preiss, 1999), testu matematických úloh a závěrečného dotazníku. Vztah mezi podmínkami pozadí (hudba, bílý šum) a počtem vybavených slov (paměťovým skórem) byl hodnocen za užití ANOVY. Nebyly identifikovány statisticky signifikantní vztahy mezi podmínkami při zapamatování a vybavení (hudba, bílý šum) a počtem vybavených slov (paměťovým skórem). Současná studie nebyla schopna reprodukovat stejné závěry jako Smith (1985), ani závěry většiny další výzkumných studií na předkládané téma.

Abstract:

The very first study dealing with music-dependent memory was the experiment of S. M. Smith (1985). He was experimentally studying whether memory can be influenced by different acoustic backgrounds (instrumental music and silence). The present study is a conceptual replication of S. M. Smith’s research (1985). The purpose of this experimental study is to find out whether there is a relationship between the presence or absence of a background music on memorising and recalling and a number of memorized words. It is also interesting to find out if listening of music on the same or altered background would be positive, supportive, negative or would have the distractive influence on human memory because previous researches don’t come to the same conclusion. A sample of 116 participants (age 19-33) took part in the experiment and was administered memory test (Preiss, 1999), mathematical test and questionnaire. The relationship between the experimental (music) and control conditions (white music) during memorizing and recalling was evaluated using ANOVA. Significant relationships between the conditions and number of memorized words were not found in any conditions. The present study was not able to replicate Smith’s concept and his results, not even the majority of the result of studies on MDM.
