Securing the Digital Frontier: Ethical and Technical Approaches to Cybersecurity for Organizations and Users

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis explores technical and ethical challenges in cybersecurity, focusing on how organizations and individual users can implement effective measures to protect data and systems. Phishing is used as a realistic threat context to examine how technical controls and human-oriented policies interact in practice. The work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part: the theoretical part reviews secondary sources on cybersecurity threats, baseline protections, governance, and ethical considerations, while the practical part compiles outputs from published quantitative and qualitative research. A documented phishing-resilience case is reconstructed into an explicit metric framework, and outcomes are compared using the compromise rate as the main indicator. The results indicate that sustainable improvement is achieved through layered protection that combines baseline technical controls (such as email authentication, filtering, patching, and MFA) with continuous awareness and a simple reporting process supported by a non-punitive security culture. Ethical considerations are highlighted, particularly proportional monitoring, transparency, and accountability in security decision-making. Limitations are acknowledged due to reliance on published evidence and incomplete reporting of some metrics, so conclusions are treated as analytically transferable rather than universally generalisable. The thesis concludes with practical recommendations suitable for resource-constrained environments and emphasizes resilience over perfect prevention.
