Analysis and Evaluation of Properties of a New Generation of Sublimation Matte Sprays for 3D Scanning

Abstract:

This thesis presents an experimental study of ten commercial matte sprays used in optical 3D scanning, covering short-duration, medium-duration and extended duration sublimating products as well as two permanent reference coatings. Each spray was applied to identical aluminium test cylinders using three application protocols, namely a visual application, a weight-controlled single dose and a weight-controlled double dose. The coated specimens were scanned at seven time points across a 120 minute window using the ATOS III Triple Scan struc-tured light scanner, and the resulting meshes were evaluated in GOM Inspect. Four parameters were tracked for each sample: the diameter difference relative to the CMM reference, the cylindricity error, the area of holes in the triangulation mesh and the remaining applied mass on the surface. The combined dataset of 179 scan reports was used to assess both the per-product behaviour and the cross-product trends. The results show that AESUB Orange maintains baseline cylindricity values for the full observation window, while Reflecon Tarnish 11 produces severe optical degradation due to patchy sublimation. The study also quantifies the influence of the application method on the initial coating layer, with the visual protocol producing a measurable dimensional bias of up to 0.072 mm for the extended-duration ATTBLIME AB24. The findings demonstrate that the true scanning window of a sublimating spray is limited by surface uniformity rather than by the total time the coating remains visibly present, and that gravi-metric application control is necessary for high-precision metrology
