Comfort Women in Taiwan

Abstract:

Obsahem této práce jsou kroky dvou taiwanských institucí, Ministerstvem zahraničních věcí Čínské republiky Taiwan a neziskovou organizací Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation (Taipeiský nadační fond na pomoc ženám), ustanovenými za účelem podpory tzv. „žen útěchy“ na Taiwanu. Ženy útěchy je termín označující ženy a dívky, jež byly mezi lety 1932 až 1945 nuceny sloužit jako sexuální otrokyně japonské císařské armádě. Jejich počty se pohybovaly v rozmezí 45 až 200 tisíci. Přestože existují případy, kdy se ženy rozhodly pracovat pro japonskou armádu dobrovolně, drtivá většina žen byla odvedena násilím nebo oklamána prostřednictvím nabídek práce v restauracích, továrnách nebo zdravotnických zařízeních, přičemž převážná část z nich nakonec skončila v tzv. „stanicích útěchy“, kde byla nucena poskytovat sexuální služby. Taiwan se problematikou žen útěchy začal zabývat v 90. letech 20. století, kdy některé taiwanské ženy útěchy, po vzoru korejských žen útěchy, začaly veřejně vystupovat se svědectvími o životě sexuálních otrokyň. Cílem práce je heuristika a deskripce kroků učiněných výše zmíněnými institucemi, které se snaží dosáhnout odškodnění a rehabilitace taiwanských žen útěchy. Nejstěžejnějšími zdroji pro tuto práci jsou prohlášení Ministerstva zahraničních věcí Čínské republiky Taiwan, webové stránky Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation (Taipeiský nadační fond na pomoc ženám) a dokumentární filmy A Secret Buried for 50 Years: The Story of Taiwanese Comfort Women (Padesát let pohřebené tajemství: Příběh taiwanských žen útěchy) a Song of the Reed (Píseň rákosu).

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis conducts a survey of steps made by two Taiwanese institutions; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China and non-profit organization Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation, to support the so-called „comfort women“. Comfort women is a euphemism for women and girls who between 1932-1945 were forced to work as sex slaves for the Japanese Imperial Army. Estimates of their numbers vary between 45 thousands to 200 thousands. Although there might be some cases where the women volunteered to work for the Japanese Army, most of them were either dragged off by force or deceived by being offered jobs in restaurants, factories or health facilities. Majority of these women were transfered to „comfort stations“ where they ended up as sex slaves. Taiwan began to pay attention to the issue of comfort women in the 1990s, at the time when first Taiwanese comfort women, following the lead of Korean victims who were the first to speak out, brought forward their testimonies. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the way today’s Taiwanese society, represented by institutions mentioned above, tries to achieve compensation for comfort women. As its source of information, this thesis refers to the Ministry of Forreign Affairs‘ statements, the Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation’s web page and two documentary films – A Secret Buried for 50 Years: The Story of Taiwanese Comfort Women and Song of the Reed.
