Vertical distribution of water macroinvertebrates in an intermittent stream

Abstract:

Abstrakt Hyporeál může hrát důležitou roli jako refugium pro organismy tekoucích vod v obdobích nepříznivých podmínek, jako jsou záplavy nebo naopak období sucha. Tato práce je věnována výzkumu vertikální distribuce makrozoobentosu intermitentního toku a jeho reakci na dočasné vyschnutí lokality. Výzkum proběhl v roce 2005 na 2. říčním kilometru Gránického potoka u Znojma. Studovaný úsek pravidelně každé léto vysychá. Vzorky byly odebrány metodou „freeze–coring“ do hloubky 70 cm a byly rozděleny na vrstvy po 10 cm. Sondy byly odebrány ve třech odběrových termínech (jaro, léto a podzim), vždy na třech různých habitatech: břeh, peřej a tůň. Vyschnutí odběrového místa bylo zaznamenáno při letním odběru. Největší celkovou abundanci ze všech druhů měl Gammarus fossarum a v rámci vyšších taxonů to byla skupina Chironomidae. Bylo zjištěno, že skupiny Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera a Trichoptera (EPT), stejně jako ostatní makrozoobentos, v době vyschnutí úseku toku prakticky nevyužívaly hlubší hyporeál jako svého refugia a zdržovaly se jen v horních vrstvách do 10 cm sedimentu (v peřeji a tůň se zbytkovou vodou). Průnik do hlubších vrstev dna mohl být omezen i výskytem různě silné vrstvy jílu na některých habitatech. Z EPT taxonů měly nejvyšší abundanci druhy Nemoura sp., Habrophlebia fusca a Plectrocnemia conspersa. V práci jsou diskutovány životní cykly jednotlivých druhů EPT taxonů a jejich význam pro přečkání období sucha.

Abstract:

Abstract Hyporheic zone may play an important role as a refuge for fauna in running waters during disturbances, such as spates and droughts. This study is focused on vertical distribution of macroinvertebrates in bed sediments of an intermittent stream and their reaction to temporal drought. The research was carried out in Gránický potok brook near Znojmo in 2005. Samples were taken by freeze-coring method from sediment surface down to the depth of 70 cm and were divided into 10 cm depth layers. The sampling was conducted on three sampling occasions (spring, summer and autumn), each time at three different habitats: bank, riffle and pool. The study site was dried out during the summer sampling. The species with the highest mean abundance was Gammarus fossarum and the most abundant taxonomic group was Chironomidae. It was found out that EPT taxa (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera), similarly as all other macroinvertebrates, did not use the deeper hyporheic layers as a refuge during the drought and they inhabited only the upper 10 cm (riffle and pool with rest of water). Penetration of macrozoobenthos into the stream bed could be restricted also by an occurrence of clay recorded in deeper hyporheic layers at some habitats. The most abundant EPT species were Nemoura sp., Habrophlebia fusca and Plectrocnemia conspersa. The life cycles of EPT species and the significance for their survival in periods of drought is discussed.
