World War II in Contemporary Political Discourses in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá politikou paměti a představuje způsoby, kterými současné politické elity reinterpretují historické události za účelem podpory svých aktuálních postojů a požadavků. Soustředí se na hlavní faktory, které se podílejí na konstrukci kolektivní paměti a identity národa, a na jejich využívání ze strany politiků. Práce se věnuje jednomu z kontroverzních témat řešených v české společnosti po roce 1989, a to romskému holokaustu. Po pádu komunistického režimu byla tomuto dříve tabuizovanému tématu věnována pozornost zejména v souvislosti s otázkou českého podílu viny na osudech Romů za druhé světové války. Jádrem diskuze se stala podoba místa paměti v Letech u Písku a existence velkokapacitního vepřína na místě bývalého romského tábora. Pomocí zmapování celé debaty týkající se tématu romského holokaustu jsou v práci představeny různé narativy vytvářené jednotlivými politiky, které slouží nejen k představení jejich konkrétního pohledu na tuto část historie, ale zejména k ospravedlnění jejich aktuálních postojů vůči romské menšině jako celku.

Abstract:

The Diploma Thesis deals with politics of memory and introduces how political elites uses the reinterpretation of history to support their current attitudes and requirements. It focuses on the main factors that contribute to the construction of the collective memory and identity of the nation and how they are used by the elites. The Thesis deals with one of the controversial topics in the Czech society after 1989, namely the Roma Holocaust. The formerly taboo topic got an attention after the fall of communist regime. The main topic of the debate was the issue of the Czech role in the Roma genocide during World War II. The core of the discussion was than the form of the site of memory in Lety u Písku and existence of a pig farm at the place of a former Gypsy camp. The whole debate related to the Roma Holocaust and it´s changes is mapped here. Different narratives used by political elites are introduced to show not just their view to this specific part of a history but mainly to demonstrate how this narratives justify the current attitudes of the elites towards the Roma minority as a whole.
