Shopping automation: social consequences of robotisation in retail

Abstract:

We can see the word automation being mentioned with increasing frequency in dystopian sounding articles, which predict it will lead to a loss of almost half of the jobs available today. While this idea could still seem like an abstract concept at this point, we can observe the arrival of mass automation in the retail industry even today, with incoming solutions such as self service checkouts or much more complex technologies, utilizing artificial intelligence. How does this automation affect consumers behavior? What is the automation seen like by these consumers? Is self service truly the only direction, the automation in retail could take, or is there a complex, very different transformation lying ahead in this industry? Will the result of this be an utopia or dystopia? This paper seeks to answer, not only the aforementioned questions, by analyzing academic studies, articles and papers by new media theorists, as well as interpreting data collected in the terrain.

Abstract:

So slovom automatizácia sa stretáme čoraz častejšie v dystopicky ladených článkoch, ktoré predpokladajú, že vďaka nej prídeme o temer polovicu dnešných pracovných miest. Hoci dnes sa môže takáto úvaha zdať ako abstraktný koncept, už dnes môžeme nástup masívnej automatizácie sledovať v prostredí maloobchodu s nástupom technológií, akými sú najmä samoobslužné pokladne či oveľa komplexnejšie technológie, využívajúce umelú inteligenciu. Ako táto automatizácia ovplyvňuje správanie konzumentov? Ako je týmito konzumentmi automatizácia vnímaná? Je samoobsluha skutočne jediným smerom, ktorým sa môže automatizácia v obchode uberať, alebo nás čaká v tomto sektore úplne iná, komplexnejšia transformácia? Môže byť výsledkom utópia alebo dystópia? Odpovede, na nie len uvedené otázky, hľadá táto práca analýzou odborných štúdií, článkov a textov novomediálnych teoretikov, ako aj interpretáciou dát zozbieraných v teréne.
