A Business Angel's Decision-making to Invest in a Start-up: The Key Role of Founder Characteristics

Abstract:

Šance startupu, že získá finanční prostředky od investorů rizikového kapitálu, je mizivá kvůli vysokému riziku ztráty. Do této skupiny investorů patří i business angels, jejichž způsob rozhodování, zda do startupu investovat, se oproti ostatním investorům rizikového kapitálu liší. Optikou teorie signalizace, jejímž autorem je Andrew Micheal Spence, tato diplomové práce odhaluje, jaké jsou zásadní faktory, souvislosti a okolnosti, které vstupují do rozhodování business angela o investici do startupu v pokročilé fázi rozhodování a jak business angels nad těmito faktory, souvislostmi a okolnostmi přemýšlí. Byla provedena hloubková případová studie, která (1) ukazuje, že nejvíce business angelovo rozhodnutí investovat je ovlivňováno dovednostmi, schopnostmi a vlastnostmi zakladatele, (2) popisuje konkrétní kombinaci dovedností, schopností a vlastností zakladatele, která má největší vliv na rozhodnutí business angela, (3) ukazuje, jak business angel ze svého pohledu zpracovává tyto jednotlivé dovednosti, schopnosti a vlastnosti do hloubky.

Abstract:

A startup's chance of getting funding from venture capitalists is slim because of the high risk of loss. This group of investors also includes business angels, whose way of deciding whether to invest in a startup differs from other venture capitalists. Through the lens of signaling theory by Andrew Micheal Spence, this thesis's in-depth case study reveals the critical factors, contexts, and circumstances that go into a business angel's decision to invest in a startup at an advanced decision stage and how business angels think about these critical factors, contexts and circumstances. An in-depth case study has been conducted which (1) shows that the business angel's decision to invest is most influenced by the skills, abilities and qualities of the founder, (2) describes the specific combination of skills, abilities and qualities of the founder that has a major influence on the business angel's decision, (3) shows how a business angel processes these individual skills, abilities and characteristics in depth from their perspective.
