Discursive analysis of the term psychopathy in Czech online media

Abstract:

Psychopatie je na poli vědy populárním pojmem již od 19. století. Postupně si prosazuje své místo i v mediálním prostoru. Tato práce se zabývá konstrukcí pojmu psychopatie v českých internetových médiích. Konkrétně identifikací diskurzů a pozic subjektů, které média utváří tím, jakým způsobem o pojmu psychopatie referují a jejich následné zasazení do globálních diskurzů. 35 článků z pěti nejčtenějších internetových médií a jednoho populárně-vědeckého webu bylo podrobeno kritické diskurzivní psychologii, metodě diskurzivní analýzy. Psychopat jako mocnář a manipulátor, duální vnímání psychopatie a psychopat je nebezpečný jsou třemi hlavními identifikovanými diskurzy zasazenými do globálních diskurzů Hareho psychopata, korporátního psychopata a chronického delikventa a psychopat je nebezpečný (třetí diskurz je sám o sobě globálním diskurzem). Výsledky podporují původní východisko práce, a sice, že bude pojem psychopatie konstruován jako negativní.

Abstract:

Psychopathy has been a popular term in the scientific community as far back as the 19th century. Gradually, it is becoming an inherent part of the media as well. This thesis concentrates on the construction of the term psychopathy in the Czech internet media. It identifies the discourses and subject positions that the media is forming through the usage of the term psychopath and how it refers to it, and subsequently identifies the global discourses to which these discourses belong. 35 articles from the 5 most read internet media and one popular scientific website were analyzed using critical discursive analysis, a method of discourse analysis. Psychopath as power-hungry and manipulative, dual perception of psychopathy, and psychopath as a dangerous person are the three main discourses identified in the analysis. These discourses fall into 4 global discourses of Hare’s psychopath, corporate psychopath, chronic delinquent, and psychopath as a dangerous person (the third discourse is also a global discourse). The results of this analysis support the initial hypothesis that the term psychopath is constructed as negative.
