John Amos Comenius' principles in the didactic games for English language teaching

Abstract:

Diplomová práce nese název Principy J.A.Komenského v didaktických hrách pro výuku anglického jazyka. První část práce představuje Jana Amose Komenského, zabývá se jeho životními osudy a především jeho pedagogickou tvorbou. Zmiňuje nejvýznamnější díla, zejména ta, která se věnují metodice cizích jazyků. Pro potřeby této práce byl nejdůležitější spis Analytická didaktika, který byl součástí díla Methodus linguarum novissima (Metoda jazyků nejnovější). V teoretické části práce jsou uvedeny nejzásadnější principy díla Analytická didaktika, které se dají aplikovat na soudobou výuku cizích jazyků. Tyto principy byly použity v přípravné fázi výzkumu a později posloužily jako základ k vytvoření aktivit vhodných pro výuku cizích jazyků. Pozornost byla věnována také komunikaci, která má ve výuce cizích jazyků své zásadní postavení. Kromě komunikace je první část zaměřena na vymezení pojmu motivace a jejích druhů. Podrobněji jsou v teoretické části definovány didaktické hry a jejich význam při práci se žáky na druhém stupni základních škol. Z tohoto důvodu jsou uvedena také specifika ve vývoji žáků druhého stupně. Druhá část práce obsahuje informace o výzkumu a jeho průběhu. Experimentu předcházel přípravný rozhovor s učiteli, hlavním cílem práce pak bylo navrhnout aktivity, které budou rozvíjet komunikační schopnosti žáků šestých a sedmých ročníků. Tyto aktivity byly prozkoušeny deseti učiteli, kteří ji je následně ohodnotili prostřednictvím dotazníkového šetření. Závěr práce hodnotí celkovou úspěšnost vyzkoušených aktivit v praxi z pohledu učitelů.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is John Amos Comenius' principles in the didactic games for English language teaching. The first part introduces the personality of John Amos Comenius, focusing on his life and especially his pedagogical production. It mentions his most important works primarily concerned with methodology of foreign languages. The most important Comenius? work for this thesis is The Analytical Didactic, originally a part of Methodus linguarum novissima. The theoretical part cites the crucial principles of The Analytical Didactic that can be applied to recent language teaching. The principles were used as a part of preliminary stage of research. Later on, they were the basis for creating the didactic games. The first section also deals with communication, which is an essential component of foreign languages teaching. In addition, the theoretical part discusses the role of motivation in language classes and the significant role of the didactic games suitable for working with teenagers. Therefore, the psychological development of teenagers and its specifications are included as well. The second part covers the information about the research and its process. There was a preliminary interview with the teachers of 6th and 7th classes in the 2nd grade of Elementary schools. The main aim of the thesis was to design the didactic games based upon Comenius? principles that would support the development of their communicative competence. These games were tested by 10 teachers. Testing was followed by evaluation of the activities by with the use of questionnaires. The conclusion of the thesis deals with the overall evaluation of tested activities from the teachers? point of view.
