The influence of dividends on investor's decision and corporate profits

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza akciových trhů s konkrétním zaměřením na porovnání firem, které vyplácejí dividendu a firem, jež dividendu nevyplácí. Srovnání dividendových a nedividendových firem je prováděno z pohledu investora za využití behaviorální ekonomie. Rovněž analyzuji rozdílné charakteristiky dividendových a nedividendových firem. Dále zkoumám návratnost šesti portfolií, sestavených na základě rozdílných dividendových výnosů, a pomocí regresní analýzy zjišťuji, které faktory ovlivňují návratnost portfolií nejvíce. Ve zkoumaných portfoliích bylo použito 3 790 firem obchodovatelných na Newyorské burze cenných papíru mezi lety 1990-2019. Tato práce přináší důkazy o tom, že dividendy a kapitálové zisky nejsou dokonalé substituty. Dále zobrazuji, že dividendové a nedividendové firmy mají některé velmi odlišné charakteristiky a regresní analýza poukazuje na rozdílnou významnost faktorů ovlivňujících návratnost nedividendového portfolia a portfolií dividendových.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze stock markets with detailed focus on comparison of companies which pay dividends and companies which do not pay dividends. The comparison of dividend and non-dividend paying companies is made by view of common investor with the use of behavioral economics. I analyze different characteristics of dividend and non-dividend paying companies. I also analyze returns of six portfolios constructed from companies with different dividend yields and with use of regression analysis I research factors with the biggest effect on portfolio performance. I make research of 3 790 companies tradable on New York Stock Exchange during years 1990-2019. This thesis brings evidence that dividends and capital gains are not perfect substitutes. I also present that dividend and non-dividend paying companies have some very different characteristics and my regression analysis shows different significance of factors which influence returns from non-dividend paying portfolio and dividend paying portfolios.
