The second demographic transition in secondary school geography education

Abstract:

Teorie druhého demografického přechodu byla poprvé publikována v 80. letech 20. století a snaží se vysvětlit dramatický pokles plodnosti v Evropě od 60. let 20. století. Nejdříve se tato práce soustředí na to, jak je daná teorie integrována do výuky geografie na gymnáziích. Popisuje, že toto učivo není pevně ukotveno v kurikulárních dokumentech. Analýza středoškolských učebnic z ČR i zahraničí ukázala, že v nich tato teorie není explicitně zmiňovaná. Dále práce detailněji popisuje samotnou teorii, ukazuje různé pohledy autorů a její časový a prostorový průběh. Součástí je, vedle popisu demografické situace v ČR za posledních sto let, analýza několika datových výstupů ilustrujících charakteristické projevy přechodu (včetně grafů a kartogramů) – odkládání plození dětí do vyššího věku, nárůst počtu nesezdaných soužití a legitimizace partnerství stejnopohlavních párů. Z teorie vychází zpracovaný plán jedné vyučovací hodiny na toto téma s průvodní prezentací.

Abstract:

The theory of the second demographic transition (SDT), initially formulated in the 1980s, aims to explain the significant decline in fertility rates observed across Europe since the 1960s. First, the thesis focuses on examining how SDT is addressed within geography in Czech secondary education. It is described that this subject matter is not firmly anchored in curricular documents. Analysis of high school textbooks from the Czech Republic and abroad showed that this theory is not explicitly mentioned there. Furthermore, the thesis elaborates on the theory itself in more detail, presenting various scholarly perspectives and its temporal and spatial progression. In addition to describing the demographic situation in Czechia over the past century, the thesis includes an analysis of several data outputs illustrating characteristic manifestations of the transition (including graphs and choropleth maps) – postponement of childbirth to later ages, the increase in the number of cohabitations, and legitimization of same-sex partnerships. Based on the theory, a lesson plan on this topic with an accompanying presentation has been developed.
