The Way of Cross in Czech Lands during Baroque Period

Abstract:

V českých zemích v době protireformace se záhy po bitvě na Bílé hoře objevují první křížové cesty komponované v krajině. Jednou vůbec z prvních je via crucis postavená na Svatém kopečku nad Mikulovem ve dvacátých letech 17. století. V jeho druhé polovině k jejich dalšímu šíření svou činností přispívali jezuité a františkáni, kteří křížovou cestu ideově zprostředkovávali Svatou zemi. Šíření kultu křížových pašijí mělo v českých zemích vlastní vývoj. Počet zastavení nebyl zpočátku závazný, varioval mezi 5 až 29 kaplí. Ty představovaly Kristovu cestu na Golgotu. nejčastěji od jeho zajetí v Getsemanské zahradě, Odsouzení k smrti až po jeho Uložení do hrobu. Poté co Klement XII. v roce 1731 ustavil závazný počet zastavení na čtrnáct a rozšířil možnosti jejich zakládání, resp. poté co Benedikt XIV. v roce 1741 povolil zakládání křížových cest v kostelech i mimo správu františkánů se ikonografický program a počet zastavení sjednotil. V českých zemích byly nejčastěji zastavení stavěna ve formě výklenkových kaplí s vkládanými obrazy malovanými na plech. Dizertační práce sleduje jak vývoj počtu zastavení, tak i typologii architektury a způsob zobrazení pašijových výjevů. Katalogovými hesly se snaží rekonstruovat jejich nejen mnohdy zapomenutý ikonografický program, ale i na základě pramenů přesněji datovat méně známé křížové cesty. Počet sedmdesáti tří exteriérových křížových cest postavených ve sledovaném období, jenž není konečný, dokládá silný protireformační vliv katolické církve rozprostřený po všech krajích Čech a Moravy. Potvrzuje se jím také pevné spojení christologického kultu se mariánskými svatyněmi. Panně Marii, která tím, že byla nanebevzatá, se v ní dovršilo její mateřství, které v Kristu vedlo ke spáse.

Abstract:

In the period soon after the Battle of White Mountain, first Ways of Cross were founded in a landscape of the Czech Lands. The via crucis running up on the slope of the Saint Hill above Mikulov established in the twenties of 17th century was one of the first. In the second half of the century the Jesuits´ activities contributed to the further spreading of the Ways of Cross as well as the Franciscans who were closely connected with Christ´s passion way in Jerusalem in the Holy Land. The spreading of a cult of Ways of Cross led to particular developoment in the Czech Lands. At the beginning, the number of stations wasn´t obligatory. That´s why the Way of Cross was given by 5 to 29 stages. These presented the way of Jesus to the Cross, from Capturing of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, his Condemnation till His Entombing. In 1731, after Clement XII set up mandatory number of stations on fourteen and made more possible their founding and in 1741 Benedict XIV gave way to found the Way of Cross in churches out of Franciscans´administration, the iconographical programme and number of stations were consolidated. The most frequently were built stations in a form of chapels with niche, in which pictures painted on metal plates were put. The thesis watches a development of numbers of stations, typology of architecture and ways of how the Christ Passion was depicted. By catalogue, tries to put together their frequently forgotten iconographical programme and on the basis of archive documents dates more precisely less known examples. The indefinite number of seventy three Ways of Cross built in the landscape in followed period appointed in the thesis illustrates the strong Counter-Reformation impact of Catholic Church on the whole of the Czech Lands. Hereby, the strong relation of cult of Christ to shrines of Virgin Mary is affirmed. The unity of Virgin Mary and her Assumption were accomplished by her Maternity, in Christ led to salve mankind, .
