Organic pollutants in sediments of selected Czech rivers

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na vývoj a validaci postupů extrakce polárních i nepolárních polutantů v sedimentech a jejich následného stanovení na LC-MS/MS a GC-MS/MS. Metod je pak využito při analýze sedimentárních archivů. Pro stanovení polárních pesticidů se nejlépe osvědčilo použití vertikální třepačky. Tato metoda poskytovala výtěžnosti 70 - 110 % a meze stanovitelnosti od 0,1 do 1 ng/g. Pro stanovení nepolárních organických polutantů (polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky, organochlorované pesticidy, polychlorované bifenyly a terpeny) byla nejvýhodnější vysolovací technika QuEChERS s výtěžnostmi 80 - 130 %. Meze stanovitelnosti pro tyto polutanty v sedimentech byly od 0,1 do 20 ng/g. Na základě vývoje a ověření extrakčních postupů a metod stanovení organických polutantů bylo těchto poznatků využito k analýzám sedimentárních archivů v nivách a přehradách na řece Ohři a Chrudimce. Sedimentární archivy poskytly údaje o kontaminacích, které proběhly v dobách, ze kterých nejsou dochované psané záznamy, nebo kdy se ještě nemonitoroval stav životního prostředí. Nepolární perzistentní polutanty, jako polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky, organochlorované pesticidy a polychlorované bifenyly, vykazovaly stabilní distribuci v odebraných profilech nivních sedimentů, tudíž mohou být použity pro popis stratigrafie sedimentů a historie znečištění. Podobné použití není možné pro polární pesticidy, neboť ty v sedimentech migrují, což je zřejmé například na výskytu chloroxuronu, acetochloru a dalších pesticidů i ve vrstvách sedimentů z doby podstatně starší, než kdy se tyto pesticidy vyráběly a používaly. Škála polárních pesticidů odrážela jejich typické využití ve zdrojových oblastech - v Nechranické přehradě s průmyslovým okolím byly nalezeny typické "technické" herbicidy, v dolním Poohří zemědělské herbicidy, a v přehradách na Chrudimce prostředky na ošetřování dřeva. Z koncentrací polycyklických aromatických uhlovodíků a hopanů, které byly extrahovány ze sedimentů, byly vypočítány diagnostické poměry polycyklických aromatických uhlovodíků a hopanový index. Na základě těchto hodnot byly v jednotlivých odběrových místech identifikovány zdroje znečištění. Diagnostické poměry poukazovaly buď na emise z dopravy, nebo na spalování uhlí a dřeva.

Abstract:

The work is focused on the development and validation of extraction procedures of polar and non-polar pollutants in sediments and their subsequent determination on LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS. The methods were then used in the analysis of sedimentary archives. For the determination of polar pesticides, the best practice was to use a vertical shaker with recoveries of 70 - 110 % and a quantification limit of 0.1 to 1 ng/g. For the determination of non-polar organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorinated pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls and terpenes), the QuEChERS salting-out technique with recoveries of 80 - 130 % was the most suitable one. Quantification limits for these pollutants in sediments were from 0.1 to 20 ng/g. Based on the development and verification of these extraction procedures and methods for the determination of organic pollutants, this knowledge was used to analyze sedimentary archives in floodplains and reservoirs on the Ohře and Chrudimka rivers. The sedimentary archives provided data on contamination that occurred at times when written records have not been preserved or when the state of the environment has not been monitored yet. Non-polar persistent pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, have shown stable distribution in the collected sediment profiles of the alluvial sediments and they can therefore be used to describe sediment stratigraphy and contamination history. Similar use is not possible for polar pesticides as they migrate in sediments, as it is evident, for example, in the presence of chloroxuron, acetochlor and other pesticides, as well as in sediment layers from a period significantly older than when these pesticides were produced and used. The range of found polar pesticides reflected their typical use in source areas - typical "technical" herbicides were found in Nechranice reservoirs with industrial surroundings, agricultural herbicides in lower reach of the Ohře river, and wood preservatives in Chrudimka reservoirs in the Chrudimka river. Diagnostic ratios of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the hopane index were calculated from concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and hopanes extracted from sediments. Based on these values, sources of pollution were identified in individual sampling sites. Diagnostic ratios pointed either to emissions from transport or from coal and wood combustion.
