The didactics of French and corrective phonetics: identifying and correcting pronunciation errors made by Czech students

Abstract:

This thesis, which supplements and expands on the successfully defended Master’s thesis, focuses on identifying and correcting pronunciation errors in French among Czech students. The work’s theoretical framework focuses on the phonetical aspects of French and Czech. Initially, it defines the basic terms from phonetics, phonology and the area of corrective phonetics and it is concerned with the area of pronunciation norms. The thesis further compares the system of phones in both the studied languages and it emphasises the theory of the phonological sieve which is applied to the vocalism in French and Czech. The chapter focused on the didactic aspects of the research describes the role of phonetics in language teaching and the inclusion of phonetics training in language textbooks and presents the method of training the pronunciation of two problematic vowel sounds selected for the purposes of the research. The methodological section of the work describes the course of the research in detail. The thesis subsequently presents the profiles of the participants in the experiment and analyses their responses from the distributed questionnaires. The analytical section of the thesis is divided into three chapters. Firstly, the French phones which are most problematic for Czech students are determined on the basis of an analysis of the recordings from the first phase of the experiment. Secondly, the recordings from the initial and concluding phases of the experiment are compared and the degree of success in improving the pronunciation of the two selected problematic phones, specifically the front rounded vowels [y] and [ə], is evaluated. Thirdly, the degree of success in improving the pronunciation of several selected difficult words is evaluated on the basis of a comparison of the recordings. Fourthly, the work analyses whether the students are capable of applying the acquired knowledge to an unseen text by means of an analysis of recordings. In the conclusion, the thesis achieves the synthesis of the research results and evaluates the success of the undertaken research.

Abstract:

Tato rigorózní práce, která doplňuje a rozvíjí dříve obhájenou diplomovou práci, je zaměřena na analýzu a odstraňování chyb ve výslovnosti francouzštiny u českých studentů. Teoretický rámec práce přibližuje fonologické aspekty francouzského a českého jazyka. Nejprve definuje základní pojmy z fonetiky, fonologie a z oblasti korektivní fonetiky a zabývá se problematikou výslovnostní normy. Dále práce srovnává systém hlásek obou studovaných jazyků a vyzdvihuje teorii fonologického síta, kterou aplikuje na vokalismus francouzštiny a češtiny. V kapitole zaměřené na didaktické aspekty výzkumu je popisována role fonetiky ve výuce jazyků, začlenění nácviku fonetiky do jazykových učebnic a je představen způsob nácviku dvou problematických samohlásek vybraných pro účely výzkumu. V metodologické části práce je detailně přiblížen průběh výzkumu. Následně jsou v rigorózní práci představeny profily účastníků experimentu a analyzovány odpovědi z distribuovaných dotazníků. Analytická část práce je rozdělena čtyř kapitol. Za prvé, na základě analýz nahrávek z první fáze experimentu determinuje nejproblematičtější francouzské hlásky pro českého studenta. Za druhé, porovnává nahrávky z první a závěrečné fáze experimentu a hodnotí míru úspěšnosti vylepšení výslovnosti dvou zvolených nejproblematičtějších hlásek, konkrétně předních zaokrouhlených samohlásek [y] a [ə]. Za třetí, na základě porovnání nahrávek hodnotí míru úspěšnosti vylepšení výslovnosti několika vybraných těžších slov. Za čtvrté, na základě analýz nahrávek nového textu hodnotí, zda jsou studenti schopni aplikace nabytých poznatků na neznámý text. V závěru práce dochází k syntéze výsledků zkoumání a je zhodnocena úspěšnost uskutečněného výzkumu.
